I am just 20 years of age, and I don't feel like getting a job or anything, cos this lifestyle just gets me depressed (i'm on 60MG Prozac, and at the moment it ain't working). I just want to EXPERIENCE life, not just aim for a family and a house in my 30's. I am certainly thinking of travelling and meeting up with people, but my Dad is telling me to get a course and I don't want to do it, cos I did plenty of courses in the past and just dropped out after a couple of weeks, no interest in them. And I don't want to do 40 hours a week cos I want to live freely. What do you think I should do with my life, I am at a big crossroads in my life.
Just do what you want to do. Get off the Prozac for starters. That shit will fuck you up. You must have a dream -- to be a writer, a musician, etc. Just go for it. If you believe you'll make it, you will. And that isn't just motivational bullshit, it's the way the universe works. It's called the Law of Attraction. You can read more about it elsewhere.
You need money to travel. Staying in school and getting a well paying job sounds like a plan to me. Put the hard work in now and get the pay off later.
ya dont nee4d to do nuthin to travel but travel..lol ppl work qall theyre lives waitin till theyre 60+ to travel and enjoy life, but your just wasting your time and gettin stuck in a rut if u wanna travel then just do it if you want a life different from the 1 ppl expect of you, then just go for it and make it happen get off the prozac, and live the life u want lifes as fun as u make it
If you are independently wealthy or clipping coupons, go for it, and waste away you life on meaningless pursuits. Otherwise, get a life.
Don't listen to Cutted. If he's not already, he'll end up a corporate lackey who only remembers his own name because people shout it at him all day. Don't fall into that trap. soaringeagle's advice is much better.
Your twenty and you're asking for advice from strangers on what to do with your life? Heres my advice. 1. Don't listen to strangers advice. 2. Stay on the prozac, or don't. 3. You can travel. It's not that expensive if you travel smart. Find some hostels, travel safe, find your way around the world. Get a bank, don't carry much money, make lots of friends, it's the best way to survive on the road. 4. If your into music, start playing more. If you get (are) good, you might make a little money when you travel. 5. If you decide on college later, do it later. You're a young guy, and there are a lot of oppurtunities to be snatched. If you want them, snatch them. It's all about taking the leap. Taking the first leap will make everything else a lot easier.
I identify with all of your ideas there bro. College is good, but not if your only motivation is to 'get a job'. You can teach yourself more than any college class if you have the drive. I intend to take some classes and maybe get a degree or two, but not untill I am happy enough with life itself to do it purely for the knowledge. Do whatever you feel. You'll be happier than the richest man if you have the strength to truly be yourself. My only advice is as others - get off the prozac. Sure it tempers your lows, but it also quashes your emotional highs. And pleasure is what makes life worth living. Don't do it cold turkey though, talk to a doc, possibly one other than the one you're currently seeing. namaste bro.
Listen to Cutted, he followed his own path in life and was very successful. I know, because I am he. There are many ways to make your own way in life, and be successful - invent something, start a company, become a successful artist or writer, etc. But this guy has no ambition and wants to keep sponging off his parents.
Not everyone knows how to explore their ambition when they're 20. I was lucky enough to get kinda pushed into it.
Nowhere, it's just a blanket insult he's using because he has no real insults toward the actual person, since he doesn't know him.
Hi Irish dude Ok u need to sort 3 things 1)the clinical side. Ok take your meds for now I suspect but try and treat your diffics in other ways. Short bursts of hard exercise. Good fresh food.Sunlight , fresh air. These aint old wives tales- theyre VITAL Maybe try tai chi , yoga , meditation. That stuff is REALLY POWERFUL. Do what u enjoy .Be around people that u get positive energy from. ( that could mean avoiding your best friend!) 2)Short term plans -Maybe u wanna do something that aint possible tomorrow. That doesnt matter-just work your way towards it and pick up valuable skills and experiences along the way. The trick is , make your long term goals scaleable ie a bit at the time. For many people travel is an excellent way to learn about yourself and the world round you. 3)Long term plans. Try and enjoy the journey , because the journey is what the goals all about. And try and have levels of long tem plans. With success in differnet areas of your life. Dont be forced into a life u aint suited to. At 20 yrs u can try and number of paths , with LOADS of time on your side. I didnt like my life at 20 .But later I found out what I really wanted. Then after that I learned how to go about it. Good luck.
OK - He says he "doesn't feel like getting a job or anything". He wants to experience life, not get a family or house in his 30s. A lot of kids his age feel that way, and that is great. Travelling and meeting people is part of experiencing life, but who is going to PAY for it? He talks of his Dad trying to get him focussed on his school courses, but he dropped out many times after a few weeks because he had "no interest in them". He does not want to work a 40 hour week, but rather "live freely". In other words, he does not want to go to school or work. He wants no responsibilities, so he can live freely. We all do - but most of us have to accept at least a little responsibility in life, even if we are depressed. My suggestion - get off the Prozac, and grow up. Check out Buddhism as a life philosophy - its core philosophy is you are what you are at the end of your life based on what positive things you do while you are living your life. There are no confessionals to cleanse you of your sins or "being born again". And there are no 40 virgins waiting for you in heaven, since there is no heaven - you will be reborn after your death as another sentient being. Whether it is a sea slug or a deer or a human is determined by how you lead your life.
No one has to pay for him to travel. People have always travelled on very little money. You can get across the country with not much cash hitching or riding a Greyhound bus. If that's not the way you envision your travels (if you want to stay in fancy resorts, fly on planes a lot, etc) then maybe wait until you're rich and famous
travelling dont need to cost money. Personally Id have gone mad picking grapes and stuff to finance a trip. Sometime u can hitch lifts , or catch a train across continents. Maybe u could teach guitar or have a hobby as a part time job. Or do stuff like painting houses. Most of the world is dirt poor so it wont cost much to live. But travel the US or Western Europ and u need savings or work , or ways of making money. If u stay in 5 stars hotels u'll *probably* learn less than if u stayed and lived with travellers and local people on your travels.
well its not that expensive to get across to the uk and then mainland europe it depends on how tough he is to sleeping here and there ,but its quite possible to do odd jobs here and there and travel around europe . Groups like the sas cross england hiding from teams sent to track them down and living off the country as they go so its possible to do, a sleeping bag a kipmat and a goretex bivy bag and you can sleep in some quite amazing places . You dont need all that but it would make it easy and you can get stuff like that for not that much money off ebay. what I would do is get out and about locally in Ireland learn how to cook food while traveling and about wild plants , get some comfortable boots and a few spare pairs of good hiking socks a set of wet weather gear (goretex is great) but dont spend lots of money on anything . you could come over to the uk in the coming year and do the festival circuit and there are eco type places that you can stay and they give you free food if you do some work
