I was dissapointed that I coudn't vote for more than one. 20's, 30's, 60's, and 90's were all beneficial. But among them all, if to choose one, it would be the 90's because I WAS THERE MAN, I WAS THERE!!! I saw it all go down and it was fucking awesome. I feel sorry for my little brother (who is about to turn 20) that he missed it. We didn't realize how great it was until it was gone, like everything. Then we saw how free-wheeling the 90's really were, how much we got away with (if you were young), how laid back it was, even if you lived in the suburbs, which says a lot. When I was my brother's age, I felt sorry I missed the 60's. I don't feel sorry anymore because the 90's were really HOT. A great time to be alive, I feel grateful. I hope I was there in the 20's. If I was, I'm sure I danced my ass off and wore beautiful clothing and got with fashionable men.
I was interested that the 'Jazz Age' of the 1920s was chosen.'The Charleston' & 'The Black Bottom' were sexually-charged jazz dances imitated by white couples from black jazz performers. That was the decade that allowed 'electricity' to power our homes. In 1926: 'The Electric Grid' was switched on in London. No more 'gas' lamps & coal fires for the middle classes. After the 'Paris Exhibition' of 1925 'Art Deco' swept the western world in design;replacing 'Art Nouveux'.The 'slient films' of Hollywood,'Radio Station' broadcasts received on 'Crystal Sets' & a new invention pioneered by John Logie Baird but taken up by Marconi for RCA Victor:'Television'.
Boy, I'm with you, Blinkin! Right on! It is written that it took Man ten-thousand years to progress from using a stone as a tool to thinking of the idea of tying a stick onto that stone to make it into a more useful tool. Ten-thousand years! In just the last one-hundred years, Man has progressed from the discovery and utilization of electricity to the invention of thermo-nuclear weapons of destruction. Ooops, I think I used the wrong word - progress is defined as the advancement for the betterment of the species as a whole - the inclination to invent a weapon of destruction can hardly be called progress - it is really retrogression. I think the best decade was the 1950's because the people were immersed in the process of building up America; and they stuck together and helped each other to do it. They patronized each other's businesses; and by doing so, they developed a cohesiveness (a "stick-together-ness") that made them feel good and made them like each other. For example, the baker down the street was selling more cakes, so since he had more money, he hired his neighbor the carpenter, to do work on his bakery instead of doing it himself. Now, the carpenter was doing better, so he hired his neighbor, the shoemaker, to make new shoes for his family. The shoemaker, in turn, could now afford to hire the local mechanic to fix his car; and so on down the line. Together, they built the country up strong, and they probably felt a sense of accomplishment we will never know. Today, we've got huge corporations sending metal out of this country over to China to be machined, because they can save a little money by having it done over there - but that same corporation fails to realize that the little-guy machine shop down the street from them really could have used that work. Not only that, but the little guy feels betrayed by his own kind; so how can he possibly feel good about his neighbor now? And, for what? For the almighty buck that the corporation really could have afforded anyway. Many people have become consumed with greed for money and power, and have forgotten how important it is to possess values of integrity and honor and loyalty. In just one-hundred years, our society has gone from what could have been a good thing into the decline of empire; and it's too late; we've gone too far. I recall when I was a child, our family was one of the first families in the neighborhood to get a color television. The technological advancements that have taken place since then are absolutely astronomical. But when will it end? I, personally, am satisfied with my Pentium One processor, but the continued pursuit of faster, smaller, better devices seems out of control. I see the signs all around me - the evidence that we are involved in the process of the decline of empire; and that's not progress. 1980s weren't " Moral Right Wing ", the 1980s were all about Hair Metal and Over The Top Action Flicks. 1. 1980s 2. 1970s 3. 1930s 4. 1940s 5. 1920s 6. 1900s 7. 1950s 8. 1960s 9. 1910s 10. 1990s
That was an informative polemic-thanks. Your observations of the 1950s were enlightening: - more close knit communities with 'cottage industries'. I believe that the '1950s'=window-displayed the American Dream & consumer-capitalism-for all time. It isn't likely to happen again because so many people around the world now won't buy the American Dream out of sheer cynicism. The '1960s' were predominated by Great Britain, almost through default. We only had to stage a 'British Invasion' across the Atlantic in 1964 of music, cinema, art, style, design & fashion & the rest of the decade was ours. Not just America but throughout the World,Britain was appointed: style-merchants. They were exuberant & convivial years of optimism & opportunity, yes it's a 'cliche' now every time that anyone says it, but it's true;even accepting the 'Cold War' & the tragic conflicts associated with it. Anyway no catching the '1960s' way ahead in the poll now.
It was a close vote between the 60's and 70's, but I chose the 70's...I was growing up, able to do things more, being a teenager/adult, and able to take action on things that frustrated me in the 60's (couldn't do much then because I was still a child). But, the 60's were something else too...I was just too young to get really involved.
I voted for the 60s b/c in my opinion it is better than any other decade. The worst decade in my opinion is the 80s.. what were people thinking then... lol the music sucked, the fashion.. omg don't even get me started.. ehh what a horrible decade. But hey I can't go all ballistic on it, I was born in the 80s.
The 60's were so bitchin! Look at all the cool movies, fashion, Music, etc.!.! I wish i could have been there to enjoy all of it!
I voted 60's. Although I wasn't there, in this lifetime that is, but in my past life I was. Or so I believe.
i cant vote, lol i love a lot of different decades for different things, i like from 30s to the 90s lol
Thanks to everyone who voted in the poll,& for eveyone's comments. The 1960s way,way ahead but If you haven't voted yet;- it could all still change!!!.
