we eat a lot of pinto beans and rice. if we can get a whole chicken at a whole foods style store for a little extra oomph to the meal, we can boil it down to use as broth for the beans to cook in. it's awesome. we'll eat on that for DAYS. and it's healthy, low sodium, tasty and still filling. if we've an extra dollar, we can throw an onion in it. i've become the queen of super-cheap food. though i prefer it with loads of green chile in it, since i think green chili is a miracle food.
Yah, beans and rice are excellent inexpensive meal components. My roommate and I were talking one night about 'bachelor staples', cheap meals that took nothing to prepare and filled you up. We came up with these four groups of foodstuffs: 1. Helper 2. Ramen 3. Stuffing 4. Rice You can add meat or veggies (my preference) to any of these and make a meal...
Hello! My favorite cheep food is wild deer for under a buck I can get lots of meat. Spaghetti can be a good economical meal. For a cheep treat I like popcorn.
hmmmm.... we used to live off jerk chicken with home made jerk sauce and rice =) havent made it lately tho cuz the kids dont like anything spicey but we make lots of spaghetti and home made mac n cheese now.... I usually make a huge pot when I cook anything and the 5 of us can eat it for 2 or 3 days...... chili is also cheap and really good...............
ohhhhh bread rocks bread and honey and bread and that marshmellow cream stuff =) or bread and molasses......................
I even have philadelphia cream cheese... with garlic and onion in it... none the less! ...and herring! ...and avocado! ...and strawberries! ...and 2 month old chocolate with is frozen solid but still edible. ...and organic humus dip! ...and soy milk! ...and sweeeeeeeeet love!
you seem like a healthy eater! we dont eat pinto beans or chilis in my neck of the woods noramally ... so they'd be expensive. If we are really going cheap, shake and bake chicken legs and rice with veggies.
also a great idea! can't fail with potatoes. i haven't been able to get an animal down in a while, so we've been having to buy what meat we do eat. and since it's of the organic, free-range type, it's a bit costly. and we're not exactly swimming in cash. there's an organic food club sorta thing near here. they provide all your meat, frozen veggies, pasta, rice, everything, once a month. you keep it in the freezer until you're ready for it. our friends are doing that right now, and actually saving some money on their groceries while buying organic. we're definitely going to look into that. a little meat besides chicken would be nice. ramen. i've lived on ramen for ridiculous periods of time.
