Hey, I was in Dublin recently and there I met Hare Krishna people. However, I had food in their restaurant, called Govindas. And I am sure it was indian food, and it was vegetarian. It was some kind of rice-stew with a lovely hard bread, they called it chips so I guess it was some kind of fried bread. I have been a vegetarian for about 4 months now and I really would like to learn how to cook more vegetarian food. Does anyone know any indian vegetarian food that you think could remind about the one I had on the restaurant? Or some other good recipes?
Mmmmm Indian food is SO GOOD. I don't really know what that is though that you're talking about.. I like curried vegetables and lentils. And Naan bread. You can get pretty good boxed stuff at Trader Joe's. I haven't tried making it though.
Krishna food is radically different than actual daily Indian food. Yamuna Devi wrote a couple Krishna cookbooks that are easy to follow, but she sounds condenscending here and there. Lord Krishna's Cuisine is the smaller one and in libraries. are you sure the bread wasn't chapatti?
I have a beautiful hard cover cookbook by the Krishnas accredited to the influence of Kurma Dasa called "Great Vegetarian Dishes: Over 250 recipes from around the world"..Every single one of them is delicious so far! I think they are the same as the things they sell at Govindas too.
i think the chips were probably pappadam. I love indian food. had some samosas last night. and soy chai. mmmmmmmm.
I've been to kalichandjis after the service on sunday evenings (when it's free ) a couple times and enjoyed it, but Cosmic Cafe (formerly Cosmic Cup) is one of my favorites mostly because of their soy chai (I crave it; it's odd) but they have excellent dishes as well, and superb samosas. Udipe is good too, but the best traditional Indian food in the area is the Clay Pit in Addison. goddamn. it is so rad.
mmmmm this thread makes me hungry i absolutely love indian food, although i'm not sure if i've had krishna food...i may have i usually eat all sorts of intresting foods when i visit my family in montreal, god montreal has the best food ever middle eastern food is really good too, and generally vegetarian http://www.vegweb.com/ this site has good recipes

Gopals Famous Vegie Nut Burgers. 1 cup cooked short grain rice 1 and 1/2 cups cooked brown lentils 1/2 cup carrot, grated 1 and a 1/2 cups breadcrumbs 1/2 a cup peanut butter 2 tablespoons soy sauce 1 teaspoon Chinese sesame oil 2 teaspoons dried basil 2 teaspoons dried oregano 1 teaspoon salt 1 and a half teaspoons asafoetida powder (which I can get but as I am not a Hare Krishna I substitute 1 clove of garlic finely chopped) 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley 1 teaspoon sweet paprika (the red one which doesn't have heat) a couple of eggs when I am not eating or feeding vegans Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and knead well. Break into about 16 portions and using wet hands press them into flat patties (this helps if they are a bit flatter rather than round balls for cooking all the way through) Place them on a greased tray and bake them in a preheated moderate oven (200 degrees centigrade/290 degrees faranheight..spelling duh!!) Once they slightly darken take them out and you can either freeze or refrigerate them until you need to cook them on a barbie!
