I have the ability to make everything come true when it comes to obtaining the materials for growing. The one thing i am lacking is a power source for the light. I am not looking to grow much more than a mother plant and a plant being flowered. I suppose i could even use a smaller lamp than 400w, anything sufficient to grow these plants would be great. Is there some way i could rig a car battery to run a ballast? If i had the freedom to use a gasoline generator i would opt for that but i am very limited. I need a power source that can be hidden and makes little noise. I feel like i am asking for a miracle...

Even if you could hook up an inverter to a battery to provide enough power for a 400-watt HPS, it would suck a battery dead in a matter of a few minutes.
Inverters work best when the engine is running.
And fuel costs for running a car or generator 12--24 hrs/day would cost a fortune in fuel, make noise and exhaust.

You have to provide house current to the grow area, or grow outside.

I have a cheap and very efficient solution for you...an extention cord

You would burn that power inverter out before the current even reached the bulb. Find another way, and don't try to ninjer rig anything because you're risking 1) a fire, 2) getting prosecuted, 3) worse...

im quoting hunter thompson when i say "anything worth doing is worth doing right"

Man you really don't want to be rigging anything crazy, like the guy said above, you may very easily cause a fire from that crazy shit. Just get 120V to that light from an outlet. Careful with extension cords as well man because they too can cause a fire if the wire size is too small or the extension cord is too long. Just put an outlet in!!! Do it yourself if you know how or call your electrician!!!!! Don't fuck with electricity if you don't know how, it bites and the teeth are damn sharp!!!!! BTW, sounds like your miracle lies within your electrical panel.

HID's use a regular house outlet.
Get an extention cord rated at least 2x as high as high as you plan to use and put a fused power strip at the end in your growspace.

You need to check with the ballast reequirements. Some, or actually most of those types of ballasts can take a few different voltages. Most of the time it's 120V/277V. But there are some cases where the light will only be able to take one of those voltages! So make sure you check the ballast requirements otherwise you will fry the ballast.
