Couple problems and questions.... in need of suggestions.

My head itches A LOT. I've been putting on a hat and taking one of those back massagers and using it on my head. That seems to help, but I can't do this at work... What is your favorite way to stop the itchies? Oh, and I wash with Dr Bronners Tea Tree liquid & I just bought a shower filter to cut down on the chlorine that dries out your skin.

I want to rejoin loose hairs to their home and I've read you must "thread" it back in. How would you go about doing this?

I promise I'll get pictures up in this thread once I get home. I'm very happy with them thus far!

    Thanks!

For the itchies and also for tightening them up a little bit, I recommend a little aloe vera. (A little goes a long way!) You might also try preparing a spray bottle with water, a little vitamin E, a few drops of tea tree oil, a little aloe, and maybe some eucalyptus or something. shake it up real good and spray it on your scalp on occasion and it might help with the dry skin. :)

As far as "threading" loose hairs back in, it's a matter of preference. I usually just leave them be, but my locks are pretty well established. If you want, the best way to do it is by buying a teeny crochet hook, and have a friend go through and pull the loose hairs through the established locks. :)

Thanks for the advice. Do you suggest going out and buying an aloe plant or finding some straight aloe vera from a FeelRite or Co-op?

I have some nice dreads going, there are some (mostly in the back) that refuse to do anything but hang out and look weird. LOL. I think I'm going to go to a craft store today for some beads and a crochet hook... not to say I don't like the messy, wild look... I wish I could keep it that way. I got special permission from work to have my locks as long as I can keep them neat and clean. Which now, shouldn't be a problem!

That's cool, where do you work?

For the aloe, it's just your own call, whether or not you want to care for the plant. I don't think it really makes any difference whether it's fresh or bottled. Heck, you might even do both - that way you could wait a while and nurture the plant a little before you start cutting it to use it. :)

It takes about a year for an aloe plant to mature, so I've heard.

i've got horrible itchy scalp in the winter, I've been taking an oil blend in the shower with me and massaging it straight on for a fews minutes before I wash.

can't wait to see pics :)

I'll have pics up this weekend. I was so exhausted last night, after The Office I fell asleep on the couch!

They look a lot better today. I bought some 99.5% pure aloe vera gel from my local co-op & rubbed it on my scalp along with using it on my dreads, kind of like hair gel... not enough to make them wet, but just enough... They look much more together today. I'm still having trouble with the back because I can't really reach, I had my husband try backcombing a little this morning, but (bless his little heart) he was being too gentle and didn't want to hurt me. LOL. So over the weekend I'll be doing a bit more maintenance & have some photos of my dreadies!

Thanks for all the help! You guys rock!

How long ago did you start yours?

I'm finding that the top of my head is dreading nicer and faster... the underneath is super fine and is just straight with no snarls or locking at all.

My husband keeps commending my patience, but I keep telling him that it took more patience to do my hair every day than the dreads do! I think I'm making him want to grow out his hair again... hehehehe. :)

I'm so glad I found this forum. I've gotten so much good info on the correct way to go about dreads. And you guys are so nice!

I think I'm going to do that when I go to bed for a few weeks. Wear 1/2 up and the other 1/2 down. I'm probably going to wash tonight... When I wash it looks like I have a bunch of rat tails hanging from my head. It takes a day or 2 to get them all fluffy again. Boo.
