i used wax and then stopped.

All it did was mud up my hair, and it never actually "dreaded" i just had clumps of hair with goo in them. Best thing i ever did was stop

    hiya,
i used wax once a week for the first 3 months all but of my new dreads and all i used to get was an itchy head, a spotty neck, gunky clothes round the neck, gunky pillows and just generally not a pleasant time of it they felt so gunked at one point i considered throwing in the towel and going for the chop! but then i found the great people on here who advised me to stop using the wax or at least cut down on how much and how often. They Have been wax free for at least two months now and my dreads are looking better everyday :) my dreads have developed and knotted up much quicker without but i guess its up to the person? as i was told unless you have a profession where they need to look tidy every day its best to go without! hope this helps in some way?.... sharon xxx

I've never used wax. Just no need for it. My locks are over two years old and are great!

never used it except 1 tiny pinch in 1 beard dread just to see what it would do..and instantly regretted it, and would never ever advise anyone to try it

I used wax at first but then I stopped after hearing about it slowing down the dreading progress.
My dreads have seemed to knot up faster since then so I guess it was a wise choice

Nada. No wax. My dreadies love me for it. :) I've spent too many hours of my life trying to scrub the wax out of other peoples' dreads - scalding and scrubbing and lathering and scrubbing some more - and depending on the stage of the dreading process, half the time giving up and cutting in the end. It's not worth it. You want your hair to KNOT, not GOOP. :)

I used it about once a week for about the first two months (will be 4 jan 16 I think) and when I came here I stopped and was so angry. the wax is still in my hair! I can;t get it out! never use it, it may make them look better for now, but it's not worth it.

ps does anyone know a good way to get the wax out now? =/

i used this mango/honey stuff made by a company called rasta locks and twists it smelled really good and didnt leave the hair all greasy and nasty feeling...

if and when i lock my hair up again after it grows out, i am going to just let it go and see what happens, which will be a long time from now, i shaved my head and my hair takes a long time to grow. i am gonna let it get down past my shoulders just to see what it will look like because it has never been that long, then i'm gonna let it go crazy =)

inavacuum - good idea, we should have that sticky! I wonder who we talk to about that? (Is Earthy Mama still the mod here?)

to remove wax, you need lots of hot water, as hot as you can stand it w/o blistering your head, wash and scrub and soak and rinse and wash again with a good liquid non-residue soap (I recommend Dr. Bronner's Tea Tree). Make up an apple cider vinegar rinse - I posted a recipe a while back, try running a search for "acv". and apply that, the vinegar will help to dissolve the wax slightly. wash, scrub, etc. again. If it's still a problem, Soaring Eagle mentioned something about orange oil. If you use it, only do so in VERY SMALL AMOUNTS. But it's supposed to help wax a lot. :) Good luck, get that shit out your hair! :D

I recently stopped suign wax (like a month) and already can see the actual change happening in my hair. The real problem with the wax is it simply froze my dreads where they were so they couldn't get any better. Im very glad I stopped.

No Wax for me. I'm on my second month. One of the reasons I started to dread was because I wanted to stop using so many *products* on my hair. So using wax would defeat the purpose. I just rip and twist to separate.

Oh and to get rid of residues I use 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to 2 cups warm rosemary tea (rosemary for dark hair) and I rinse my head with it and scrub a bit and it feels so good!

I got this guy with gorgeous locks down to his knees in Bangkok to work on my hair recently. I hadn't used wax at all in the two or more years my hair has been locked but he wanted to use some so I told him he could use just a little bit. Can't say I regret it ÉÃèÊÕÃà´ÕÊÓàÃÕ¹éÐÊàÊèà

"nope. never. all natural. (hows that working for you?)"

I was going to save money to buy one of those stupid dread-starter-kits from KnottyBoy, but I found knottylocks at the right moment, lucky me :D

And it's working great, but I shall backcomb now since my parents forced me to comb out my natural progress now and then ;c
