Man i know it takes time but im roughly starting month 4, and holy crap my hair looks horrible. It looks worse every week, idk what im doing wrong. I do nothing but wash with dr bronners every 2-3 days and wear a tam in the mornings (fack its cold).

BUt man the loops are crazy, each dread has like 3-4 crazy ones that loop a good inch out from the hair and are THICK, like never going away thick. Can somone help me out here.

When I get up in the morning im just like fuck this sucks and I feel like just soaking my hair in conditioner and combing them out, but I know I would regret it, help please!

Man, i know exactly what you mean! Mine are crazy and thick with loops and most of em are flat. I've had mine for about 5 months now and i'm seriously considering cutting them off. I love them so much but i also can't stand them. I don't mind they're not perfect, cause i never wanted them to be, that's why i let them go naturally but they're just blah, i can't explain it. I know there's no way to 'restore' them so i hope they grow on me a little more so i wont want to chop em.

Seriously guys its all part of the process :) mine were full of loops! you gotta just learn to love them :) mine at about 4 months looked like this

you couldnt even tell they were dreads they had unraveled so much.

Now at three years they look like this

the fact is the loops shows that the yare tangling...

my advice is quit using Dr bronners, or at least not so often, i used to wash mine once a week and then a few times a month and now its when ever the weather is warm enough to dry them out enough.... and my dreads arent dirty or smelly. infact the smelliest dreads i know are from people who do weash them a lot because it screated the perfect atmosphere for mould.

as far as them not being perfect thats why you went natural.. what did you expect?? going PROPERLY natural is not even guidingthe hair its just forgetting you have hair for 3 years and realiseing you have a few dreads at the back at the end of it :p patience and time guys trust me... you'll miss their changing daily when they stop doing it, mine hardly change at all these days.

Don't get discouraged. One thing I've learned from having locks is being patient.

If you aren't patient, they won't have a change to start looking like real dreadies.

cutting them off is the last thing I would ever do. I actualy went through with it once and then I just realized...wow.. ahah then a few days later I started again [IMG] Now I'm much further into it than I was. I think my first trial run helped me out a lot. I think it got the whole impatient wanting to have dreads right then thing out of m system. Now I don't really pay attention to my hair and just enjoy watching it progress and change.

yeah your dreds will sort themselves out, ive only had mine for 4 months...and they are loop tastic and flat all over but still fun.
If you really want a boost to make you feel better about them, make sure they are going good find yourself a freind, or a freind of a friend with dreadlocks and just hand out with them for a bit. I spent a weekend with someone with mature dreadlocks and i feel way better about them then i ever have!

I think one of your problems is, you might be washing your locks -too- often. Ok, so I'm not an expert.. But, personally, my dreads always end up super soft/fluffy/undone/aaaargh/!%#@*&%! when I wash them, and it takes a few days for them to go back to 'normal'. (I wash my hair about once every 2 weeks -- I have very dry hair).

Just a thought. Maybe it'll help you out?

im almost 5 months natural now and my hair is wicked nasty, i got gazillion loops plenty of undreaded hair, lots of them are wicked squiggly, most of them are flat and are going off in like two different sections at the tips lol, its fun watching my hair change though and hopefully someday it looks like i have dreads :D

I'm about one year and one month into my natural locks and I still have sections of hair that are completely un-dreaded. It really takes time for them to lock up, especially if you have straighter hair. I would palm roll more [if that's somthing you choose to do, I don't], wash your hair less often, maybe once a week. That will cause your scalp to produce less oils and 'nastiness', and of course, give them time. :D

    Trees don't grow in a day. ;)

yeah see problem is I cant wash my hair any less.

    I work commercial construction.

If you saw my work conditions you would say wash every day.

Three days and seirosuly MUD comes out of my hair. THe water is black.

Many days I come home and my hair is white from all the crap stuck to it.

BUt whatever after buying a big ass thing of conditioner and stairing at it for a couple hours thinking of brushing them out I got over it.

    Thanks for all the supprot!

aww man when i read this, it sounded exactly like my plea almost 2 years ago. Dreads are a journey, there is no destination, the adventure just keeps going on. your dreads are always changing over time. I had sooooo many loops at least 2-4 in each dread. [IMG]<<< look how mine have loops all over. well that was from a while ago and now most of those dreads are pretty much straight now and startin to round out a lot. it was nuts, but they do start to knot up into your dreads. it took about a year for mine to start becoming the dread. TIMES ARE TOUGH but wait them out, just think how great your dreads will look in a few months. one day you will see how all of the sudden your dreads look totally different, or more mature over time. PLEASE DONT COMB THEM OUT!!! they are beautiful trust me, dont listen to wat people who tell you they look like shit or u did them wrong. this is just the process of dreadlocks hang in there man!! patience!!!
    one love

Yeah this is old but hey whatever, dude trust me combing is the last thing. I combed mine out at 3 months cause I looked like friggin James Brown (mugshot) and well I combed it out and well it was worse lol so anyway. I got em back in and they're better then ever I need to update daily more now... =/
