What books speak Peace and Love to YOU?

Wow! I am relatively new to this site and I have appreciated the opportunity to discuss the mystical concepts of a hippie. The Hip Forum is obviously multidimensional and not without conflict.

Recently I came across a vile, hate filled, bigoted rant.

It is impossible for me to look at the events in the word today without feeling anger but I have learned to temper my anger with peace and love. Oddly these attitudes came to me indirectly as the direct focus of our society is conformity, competition, and consumerism.

Peace and love are not subjects our social institution dwells on so the concepts that give voice to my intuition come from “other” sources…mainly family and community.

But there have also been a few books that have profoundly influenced my thinking…books that were conceived and written with peace and love in the heart of the authors.

A few of the books that have profoundly influenced my thinking are:
    • The Whole Earth Catalogue
    • The Way of Zen
    • Be Here Now
    • Flight of the Eagle
    • Politics of Ecstasy
    • Education and Ecstasy
    • I Ching Workbook
    • Practices and Principles of Plant Propagation
    • A Pattern Language
    • Steps to an Ecology of Mind
    ....to name a few!

This was an interesting question, I had to go back, back, back, in time and try to remember what books influenced my thinking. Here goes.........

    The Prophet............Kahil Gibran
    Only One Sky..........Bhagawan Rajneesh
Hey Beatnik.............Stephen Gaskin and The Farm
    Monday Night Class...Stephen Gaskin
    Be Here Now............Ram Dass
    Siddhartha...............Herman Hesse
    Something by...........Alan Watts
    Everything I Needed
To Know I Learned in Kindergarten.......Robert Fulghum
    Jonathan Livingston
    Seagull................Richard Bach
    The Road Less
    Traveled...............M.Scott Peck
    Simple Abundance.....Sarah Ban Breathnach
    The Holy Man and
    The Holy Man
    Continues His
    Journey............Susan Trott
Spiritual Midwivery....Ina May Gaskin and The Farm
    The Continuum Concept.....Jean Liedloff
    Attachment Parenting........Dr. Sears
    Don't Sweat the
    Small Stuff......... Richard Carlson
    Grace and Grit...........Ken Wilbur
    Eat, Love, Pray.........Elizabeth Gilbert

.......These are just a few that I can remember. That was a good exercise in thinking about books that made you think!!!!!!!

You will no doubt find some of these titles that I read prior to rejecting the hero worship of America I had grown up with at 12 y.o, puzzling, howevr I am of the opinion that they strongly influenced that decision, so I include them here.

    Fail Safe, 5th grade
    1984, Aldous Huxley, 5th grade
A Brave New World, Aldous Huxley, 6th grade
The Manhatten Project, (the making of the atomic bomb 6th grade
The Prophet, Kahil Gibran, 7th grade
    Bhagavad Gita, and
    Upanishads, 7th grade

Stranger in a Strange Land, Robert Heilein 18y.o.
Sermon on the Mount, Mathew 21y.o.
First Corinthians 13 Paul of Tarsus 21y.o
    Sonnet 116: Willy the Shake
Whenever I am struck by the wonder of being, whether by quasars or tulips, I know that love is essential, I can't say for certain why this is, I think that it may have something to do with what many would call a "mystical"characteristic of mine, empathy.
That last notatin is from the book of life, the one I read and write everyday.
    Peace, love and wonder
