It's coming up to that time of year where my children will be returning to school and summer weather usually makes for headlice thru the school. Has anyone with dread had headlice before and if so how have you eradicated them? Also does anyone know of any fail proof preventions?

I'm only 2 1/2 month into natural dreads, but i don't think i could comb them out even if i wanted to. So prevention is the best cure :)

i'm sorry, i don't know the answer. I can say though, That I have plans to make a nice thin cotton tam for my midwest USA summer to keep all the gnats and skeeters out of my hair, maybe you could cover your hair during the lice season?

I had head lice a few times when all my hippie pixies returned from morocco with them, they infested our whole town virtually.

Look for stuff called Quasia, its a bark, you just boil it up andwash your hair with it once every 3 days three times if that makes sence. dont get it in eyes or mouth cos ittastesd HORRIBLE! but nits hate it.

Also i used an organic nit shampoo called Delacet.

for preventing them.... its a hard one, keep your head covered :S ...... shave your childrens heads hehe :p or spray a tea tree mixture on your head every day, mosty bugs hate tea tree :)

Yeah, tea tree your kids' heads too, perhaps (if they can take it!) That and a hat are always the best preventative measures.

I've heard of lots of different "natural" concoctions for getting rid of them, but they aren't always very pleasant. You basically need to make your head the most inhospitable environment you can for them, to kill them/run them out. I've known people who've done this with everything from tea rinses, to coffee grounds and cayenne, etc. on the head (in a bag or cap) for a couple of days. You need to get rid of any grown bugs first, then hit it again 6-7 days later to kill the freshly hatched nits, BEFORE they have a chance to lay more. It's a bitch, and an unpleasant experience. You're better off preventing the infestation to begin with. Good luck! :)
