There's an event tonight to protest the State of the Union, or the "State of Catastrophe."

It's at 8 PM in Washington, D.C., at the Grant Statue on the west side of the Capitol building.

There's more information at the World Can't Wait site: http://www.worldcantwait.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3798&Itemid=223 and at the D.C. Anti-War Network site: http://dawndc.net/events/.

(I know this is really short notice, but I just found out about it today... And if you're worried about missing the real State of the Union address, you can probably watch it on C-SPAN's website after the protest.)

There's also a vigil on Friday evening to protest prisoner abuse. This Saturday, of course, there's the March on Washington, which is going to be really big.

see I don't necessarily see what the point of protesting the state of the union, it's every year regardless of who's pres. don't get me wrong I hate bush but I think it's kinda dumb. Especially because of the protests yesterday on abortion and because of the Jan. 27th march being so close together.

I don't think it's really protesting the State of the Union address itself, but more... the ideas in the address, and the state of our country (the union).

The World Can't Wait website says the protest is to "Bring This to a Halt: Iraq War, Torture, Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes."

You have a point, but I'm going anyways, to register my disapproval of the current administration and its policies.

I didn't hear about the protest before I watched it. How many of you protested?

I protested it by not watching it! The State of the Urine Address has become nothing but a very carefully orchestrated bunch of PR, and Bush happens to be absolutely the world's worst PR person/actor, anyway.

And our 'opposition' party, the Democrats, are going to pass a few non-binding resolutions protesting troop buildup in Iraq, etc., and a few other things he proposed, as nothing but a symbolic opposition to Bush's policies. Big rusty fucking deal. What a big waste of hot air. If the Dems had any guts, they'd impeach his ass for prosecuting a totally unjust war and causing the death of hundreds of thousands of people. As it is, they're content with putting on a mild facade of being an 'opposition', and nothing more. Some democracy. We'd be better off with a good, benevolent monarch.

His speech, boiled down to three sentences basically stated "I am in charge, I make the decisions, if you oppose me, too bad".

    What a fuckhead.

He didn't mention anything about Katrina. The SOTU is supposed to give us an update on progress at home.

That's what's the most frustrating about all of this. People will have to take to the streets like they did in the 70s to stop this mess. That's the only thing that jolts politicians back to reality.

That's because his administration cares nothing about the poor impacted by Katrina. You can bet Trent Lott's home has been rebuilt and he received his insurance payout.

I think if the truth be known the republicans lost the last election because of the handling of Katrina. Every time Bush talks about protecting our homeland, I think about how that catastrophe was handled and the loss of life that happened mainly to the poor, and the fact that many of them have not received the support they were promised.

My sad story: I got lost, wandered around D.C. for over an hour and a half, and missed the State of the Union protest. Were there really only five people there? (I did find the peace protest today. [My first protest!!] That one was impossible not to find. It was awesome.)

While I agree that Katrina might have had an affect on the midterm elections, I think that the war in Iraq was the main reason for Republicans losing their majority in Congress. (And "Every time Bush talks about protecting our homeland," I actually wonder what he was doing on 9-11...)
