They both screw you up worst than cannabis! Just because they are multi billion dollor busness doesn't make it right!
"worst than"? damned if I know though, they'd be great to tax the fuck out of by the gov't instead of wasting police $ on dealing with it as an illegal substance (as they do with cigs and alcohol. Actually it sounds like cigarettes are going to be taxed nearly out of existence here, but, not really the subject at hand)
they aren't legal because they're big business. they're legal because of centuries of use among westerners, as a traditional and longstanding part of the culture. the bureau of alcohol, tobacco and firearms has authority over....well....alcohol, tobacco, and firearms. the DEA and FDA have authority over other drugs, but ultimately i believe the DEA has the final say in actualling scheduling them. seeing as the ATF is inherently responsible for controlling alcohol and tobacco, the DEA pretty much cannot schedule them. on top of that many states and cities have passed smoking bans of various sorts. i expect this, and severe taxation, are about as close as we'll ever get to prohibiting tobacco or alcohol without a major movement along the lines of the WCTU (women's christian temperance union, the group that pretty much brought about prohibition way back) even then enough people make a living from these industries and they have such a powerful lobbying force that the hypothetical movement would have a much harder time passing another law like they did all those years ago. given what information we now have about drugs we used to think we knew an awful lot about (even though we didnt) the government would probably have a different hierarchy of what drugs should be allowed and what shouldnt. that said bureacracies are designed to be stable and resistant to extreme change (even with a multi party system) and it will be a long time before the ATF or DEA or FDA are done away with, significantly reorganized, or change the way they think about and do things. THAT is why alcohol and tobacco wont be banned even though marijuana is. different people have authority over different substances. its not just some guy arbitrarily deciding what is "legal" and what is "illegal." the laws are complex, and marijuana is even relatively tolerated in some parts of the country. i'm not saying its right, or that its for the best interest of the country, but when you look at it a little more analytically it really does make sense. besides....as someone commented earlier...keep as many things legal as possible. it sucks that we can't smoke pot, but i wouldnt make alcohol or tobacco (two things which aren't too bad for you in moderation, even if they are a lot worse for you in excess than marijuana is) illegal in favor of legalizing pot.
Yep and taxed to hell, thats why. it would be to hard to start a Marijuana tax, as it gorws every where easily spare the artic circle.
My buddies mom thinks that if marijuana became legal and the government started taxing it, that a lot of the different strains of it would cease to exist. I dont really understand where she gets off thinkin this, but i thought id just throw that out there...
It could easily be taxed. Farmers would be hired to grow a large ammount of MJ and then they would sell it too companies. The companies would package it (bag it, roll it into blunts, roll it into joints, w/e) and then supply it to the super markets and other stores. The stores would sell it to the person who walks in an buys it, and BAM a state sales tax, not to mention the many other taxes in the process. It would be like tobbacco. They could even keep the law that says it is illegal to grow MJ, therefore making most people buy it from the stores. Wouldn't be that hard...I mean you can brew your own alcohol, but you just buy it from the store right (note: you=most people in the world)? You can also grow all your own food and raise your own meat animals...but almost everyone buys their food. I really don't think there would be a problem taxing the ganj. I think the reason weed and most other drugs are illegal is because of the scare and false information the public knows about them.
ive posted a petition here, uk forums, a few different sites im member of, and basicly many bristish forums full of ppl that smoke mj. forums of 100 000 of members, the petition has been signed by just over 2000 people, face it- everyone moans, while sitting on theire arse. i dont give a fuck anymore. ima grow my own, and basicly people, if you want quality- do it youself. the government is too fucing currupted and is full of dumb fucks, basicly be happy with what you got :/
we cant just sit back and say "well, its too messed up" or "it wouldnt work" cuz then it never will. something needs to be DONE if you want someone done.
The reason I posted this was that I found it ironic that cannibis kills no one, BUT Cigs and alcahol kills thousands I would love to see cannabis legalised, but sadly the cigarette and alcahol companies don't want the competition
do you people not realize what a blow to the "war on drugs" legallizing marijuana would be? thats why it will not become legal for a longgg time in the USA, if it were to become legal tommarow, the 30-40 year investment on "the war on drugs" will be deemed a total failure, and for billions and billions of dollars of spending to be deemed a waste would just not happen, as well it would open doors for debate on harder drugs and thins like safe injection locations
