The Nellie, a cruising yawl, swung to her anchor without a flutter of the sails, and was at rest. The flood had made, the wind was nearly calm, and being bound down the river, the only thing for it was to come to and wait for the turn of the tide.

The sea-reach of the Thames stretched before us like the beginning of an interminable waterway. In the offing the sea and the sky were welded together without a joint, and in the luminous space the tanned sails of the barges drifting up with the tide seemed to stand still in red clusters of canvas sharply peaked, with gleams of varnished sprits. A haze rested on the low shores that ran out to sea in vanishing flatness. The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless over the biggest, and the greatest, town on earth.

The Director of Companies was our captain and our host. We four affectionately watched his back as he stood in the bows looking to seaward. On the whole river there was nothing that looked half so nautical. He resembled a pilot, which to a seaman is trustworthiness personified. It was difficult to realize his work was not out there in the luminous estuary, but behind him, within the brooding gloom.

God is that. God is also everything else. God is dark and is light. Most of all God smiles at the beauty that his creations can bring upon his World. God also like huge donations on Sunday mornings. Yep, beauty is fine but cash is great.

If superstring theory is to be a theory of everything, then it must unite all the symmetry groups of the standard model, as well as gravity. The symmetry group that was chosen for superstring theory is the E8 ×E8 group [2], since it is thought to unite all of physics. This is the state of highest symmetry. At lower energies, the flat, 10 dimensional theory described by the E8 ×E8 breaks into an E6 ×E8 group in which 6 dimensions are compactified, or "rolled up", leaving only the 4 ordinary dimensions of spacetime. Hence the superspace is not continuous on the microscopic scale, but highly curved in those 6 dimensions. The E6 group, superspace curvature notwithstanding, is thought to break down into both the supersymmetric standard model, and supergravity. The supersymmetric standard model breaks into the three familiar forces of particle physics (the strong, weak, and electromagnetic forces), while supergravity is thought to give rise to general relativity, which describes the familiar force of gravity. (See Figure 1.2 for the symmetry breaking connections described.) These are the fundamental properties of superstrings. These ideas can be extended to describe the motion of a single string in superspace, and then string interactions.

Two formulations of superstring theory exist. In one, the superstrings are open, and hence have two ends. In the other, the superstrings are closed loops. In both formulations, the strings move through the time dimension. Describing the strings in classical fashion, an open string sweeps out a world sheet, and a closed string sweeps out a world tube. (See Figure 1.3.) The closed string formulation is topologically more interesting and will be described further. As a closed loop moves through time, it vibrates in directions perpendicular to the world surface. Incorporating quantum mechanics complicates this picture. In quantum mechanics, the motion of a particle is not precisely defined. When a particle moves through space, it is considered to take every possible path from the initial state to the final state. Each path is weighted with a probability, with a high probability assigned to the paths of least action. This formulation of quantum mechanics is called the method of summing over histories. The same method may be used to describe the motion of superstrings. In superstring theory, summing over histories requires summing over all the possible world tubes connecting the initial state to the final state. The different paths may be thought of as fluctuations in the world tube. (See Figure 1.4.) However, the world tube concept is useful for describing not only the motion of a single string, but also string interactions.

All closed superstring interactions can be pictured as world tube constructions. Different interactions are illustrated with topologically different constructions. Essentially, string interactions are represented by world tubes topologically equivalent to a sphere or a torus with an arbitrary number of holes. The simplest interaction is one in which two separate strings join to form one, and then split off to form two again. The world tube for this interaction has the appearance of two pairs of trousers joined at the waistband. This world tube is topologically equivalent to a sphere. (See Figure 1.5.) The next simplest interaction is represented by a world tube that looks like the previous trouser diagram with a hole in the waistband. This world tube is equivalent to a torus. (See Figure 1.6.) These diagrams can be generalized to any degree of complexity by adding more holes. (See Figure 1.7 Now the theory of superstrings to this point has been presented as a purely mathematical theory. If it is to be a theory of fundamental physics, then it must relate directly to the physical world. This aspect of the theory is fraught with difficulties still remaining to be solved.
