The only history I know is in the 1930s it was mainly among the jazz sene with them mainly being african american. I was just wondering who was smoking it first and who brought it here. Was it native americans or europeans?

marijuana is deep in america's history. They used to sell hash at festivals where there was fireworks 'to enhance the viewer's pleasure'. You'd suck on the end of a hooka they had behind a counter. And yea, G.W. smoked mary... the constitution is even printed on hemp paper. Lincoln smoked too. look up Jack Herer's "The Emperor Wears No Clothes" ... homie.

    G. Washington grew hemp, likelyfor cordageand seed, not for smoking, athough he might have used the buds for cooking.

The Constitution is printed on vellum, not hemp paper. The first drafts were on hemp paper. Old Glory, the first U.S. flag, was made of hemp cloth.
But hemp and marijuana are slightly different plants.
I first people that smoked MJ in what is now the U.S. were probably Mexicans, when the Southwest was Mexican territory, in the 1800's. It's doubtful native Americans smoked before then because MJ is not native to the Americas.
Also back in the 1800's or before, sailors/laborers introduced it to New Orleans.

Remember, marijuana/hash has been used by people since before recorded history. It's mankinds oldest (and safest) drug. It's possible that hash/MJ seeds came over during the Spanish conquests (1500 & 1600's).

^^^ Ranger, good info But I do know for a fact that he smoked Marijuana. Im not saying that it dosent sound strange that he smoked but it is true. And yes growing hemp was a huge cash crop down in the south, so you are partically right, but he really did. I saw that on the History Channel

Regardless of what you say you saw on The History Channel there is no indication that G. Wahington smoked marijuana.
They have a copy of a letter purportedly written by Washington that mentions the hemp plant and the use of it's seeds and possibly the flowers, but for food, not smoking.
Washington was from England, where marijuana was unknown in the 1700's.

An Excerpt of George Washington's diary:

note the mentioning of his separating the male and female hemp plants too late.
One would imagine if this hemp were being grown simply for fiber than it wouldn't matter, yes?
    Flimsy evidence, but evidence nonetheless.

There are other reasons to seperate male and female hemp plants other than smoking them.
For example, the females are the only ones that bear seeds.

Back in G. Washington's day, indeed since it's existed, one of MJ's benefits has been it's prolific seed production, which can be used for food or pressed for oil.

Well, personally I'm inclined to agree with ranger... most people, ESPECIALLY white europeans (or descendants of 'em), never smoked marijuana until it got popular in this century. i mean, there were a few people that experimented with hasheesh, but smoking weed was really not a big thing. hemp was huge, one of the number one industries in the world, so it makes a lot more sense that washington would want to learn about hemp. but, no one can really say for sure.

the first group of 'americans' that really definetly smoked weed were mexican immigrants - i mean, that's one of the main reasons it's illegal today (racism, all that ugly shit). the song "la cucharacha" is actually a reference to smoking weed. hence "roach"...

btw, if anyones really interested in this, pick up Cannabis by Martin Booth. very well researched and written.

^The earlier poster was right, cannabis and hemp aren't native to the Americas. Native Americans smoked peyote, and probably other things, but I'm not sure.
