I was reading THIS article today and a little curious as to what people who lived there thought about it.

I know what my own gut reaction is but news always has a bias and sometimes you just can't see the whole picture by what's given in a few paragraphs so...Any Orlandians care to comment?

Boy, that Daytona police chief looks like a real bozo! He acts like it too! Typical ignorant Floridian! I've met dozens of 'em while I was in Florida.

But about Orlando, in the 90's I was a transient and stayed in Orlando for about 2 yrs. Lake Eola is right down the block from the homeless shelters, there are two, the salvation army and some other one I can't remember the name. During the day, the guys who don't get hired on as day laborers usually end up at Lake Eola or the library which is close to the lake. They spend their time trying to hustle up the $7.00 bucks it cost to stay the night at the shelters.

On some days I would sit in the park, the cops would always hassle you for sleeping on a park bench--this was not allowed! When you're a transient you get so tired and only want a place to sleep, but sometimes the local church ladies would show up and hand out hero sandwiches and $5.00 bucks, God bless 'em! So I guess that's how it all got started.

Why do transients go to Orlando? I think it's the weather and Disney. 7000 of 'em huh? Well what can I say? Orlando and Florida in general have always had this anti homeless mentality. You get the impression after seeing Orlando that it was built by the army corp. of engineers on some military campaign, all the trees and shrubs and bushes are pruned and neatly cut with no overgrowth exposing in plain sight all possible places one might want to hide and catch some sleep but no, not in Orlando, they don't want that and they go to great lengths to discourage transients.

I doubt if Orlando will succeed in outlawing the feeding programs, after all it's only downtown and Lake Eola their talking about, Disney and everyplace else is to far to walk to. And there's no transients there.

Man, the whole area around Lake Eola has gotten seriously fancy-fied since you been around here. The whole damn town, really. Rents have tripled in the past 5 years, most apartments were changed into overpriced condos, working people squeezed outta town. I'm on my way out of here myself. this is no place for anybody anymore.
