pregnant vegitarian

    hi all. mt hubby and i are veggies, and i'm 6 months pregnant...in the beginning i craved meat so bad and it passed....my doctor said my nutrition is excellent and i did not need to eat meat unless i wanted to~so i fought it off and didnt give in to my cravings...

    months passes and again i am craving beef, namely corned beef of all things...its nothing i cant ignore

    as a veg i know all the gory details of meat eating, so please dont attempt to digust my cravings away....i'm just wondering if anyone else has gone through this?

    we plan to raise a veggie baby....what a wonderful, peaceful way to begin life...
    some support would be so lovely...lovin you all jenn

    Hi Jen...

    I'm a veggie and I stayed a veggie for my first pregnancy. I got the cravings and all but they passed and I had a happy healthy baby. My next baby though I had some nutrition probs and ended up needing a little meat. I've since then returned to being a veggie. My kids are for the most part vegatarian except when my mom slips them something (not very supportive I guess, lol). I'm here if you'd ever like to talk about veggie parenting/pregnancy. Just PM me.     I would probably give into the cravings just util you have your baby. Might make both you and the baby healthier, then go back to being a veggie.

    Doubtful. Making exceptions won't automatically ensure health; it will just make it easier to shrug aside your convictions in the future. "Oh, I'll just eat some now and quit soon" becomes "Just when I'm at so-and-so's house" becomes "Just when it's convenient", etc.
    There's no magical property to meat that will guarantee a healthy child, in fact there are some viable concerns about the hormones (in meat) and mercury (in seafood) and their effect upon the mother and child. Considering that the mother is healthy, and there are plenty of 'meaty' vegetarian products to satisfy cravings, she seems to be doing fine without flesh.

    Hey, good for you, girlie! I don't have any kids; I am vegetarian though. I recently read on the website of The American Dietetic Association that a well planned vegetarian diet is healthy even during pregnancy. Maybe the meat your craving is a sign that you need iron or protein? I'm sure there's another way to get it! Anyway, congratulations on being so commited to the health of you and your baby :).

    WIcked choices. best wishes for the child and y our family.

    i dont crave meat anymore. its a mental thing, its just not appetizing at all.

    I reckon you'ld be aching for meat becuase your body is running overtime supposting you through the pregnancy, so youre prolly needing iron, you could try taking some supplements, of course after you check with a doctor.

    thank you all so much! meat is not an option, as a matter of fact last nite i had a dream that my hubby was sitting with a huge bowl of assorted meats, and a lobster in front of him chowing down, and i said out loud ewww, that DISGUSTING! while i was sleeping~~~haha!!


    pregnancy cravings are like nothing i've ever experienced~~they can be very demanding! so thank you all for the beautiful support!

    if your hemocrit is fine, add calories. our bodies know that flesh is densely-packed calories, and the "default" setting is for the quickest fix.
    I did that, ate fish, and puked for two days. Great, "Return of Morning Sickness."
    Sounds like a B movie.
    keep a diary for a week and see if you are getting enough food.
    I finally found the combo to kill my cravings: heinz 57 on a bagel. Really.
    My mom told me that when she made hamburgers when i was a kid (I went veg at 13) she used H57 in the mix.
    Works in lentil burgers, BTW.

    you dont need meat , thats pure bullshit. i know you said its not an option but i just wanted to say that Your body doesnt know the difference between protein from beef or protein from beans or soy milk. just that it gets the proper ammount of each nutrient.

    my friend was a veg and pregnant...she ate only starch for the first two months...she felt sick and unsatisfied by most foods around her. then she realized that the problem was the substanciality of what she was eating- the desire for meat was only because all the other foods she had subjecting herself to were 'empty.' she then proceeded to get into veggie meats, tofu, and hearty lentil patties, and felt satisfied. so, maybe you just need to pick up on the protein a bit.

    Never been pregnant, so can't offer much advice.


    I plan to have veggie pregancies in the dim distant future, good luck with yours :)
