I've been a vegetarian for about two and a half years. Chicken was a meat that I miss a lot, it was mine and I'm sure that other vegetarians miss it also. Well, today at lunch I had a meatless chickenburger. I actually moaned a little from the pleasure I got from the taste of this. It was just like chicken. I hope the cafe ladies serve this dish more often.

Just thought I would let you know.

yeah, i find that mock chick'n is the mock meat that tastes most closely to the real thing. especially if its a mock chick'n patty, between some buns, with some ketchup on it.... cheese or no cheese.

depending on brand, the chick'n nuggets are delicious too!

im glad schools are starting to serve more vegetarian/vegan options!

If you can find it, try a Quorn fake chicken product - OHMIGOD. The first time I had them, I was sure they had to have chicken broth or something added, but no. They're vegetarian - unbelievable. And made from mushroom protein instead of soy, which is great if you get a tummy ache from soy like I do.

actually i found it very interesting to learn what quorn brand products are really made of...
Quorn is made from the soil mold Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684, not mushrooms.

heres the link to the wiki for quorn.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quorn
read te history, and production, and such. its very interesting.

heres some quotes from the page"

"Following an extensive screening process, the filamentous fungus Fusarium venenatum, discovered in 1967, was isolated as the best candidate. In 1980, RHM was given permission to sell mycoprotein for human consumption after a ten-year evaluation programme - probably making Quorn one of the most tested foods in existence."

"Quorn's fungus is as closely related to mushrooms as humans are to jellyfish."

but let me tell you what...the mock chicken stuff is amazing..and it is very close the the real thing in taste...mmmm...on a bun, in a nugget, or they have strips that you can add to stirfrys of fajitas...mmm..

morning star is my brand of choice!!

    Comment on Quorn:
the confusuion of mushroom and mycoprotein is common.
Mushrooms are Mycoprotein, but not all mycoproteins are mushrooms.

Quorn is good stuff, my omni family enjoy it too so we can make dishes for all of us. It's marketed more as a health food here, so has a decent following. They have lots of variations on the theme; mice, filets, burgers, 'meat balls' etc.
It's not vegan though, as there is an egg dervied ingredient in there.

I'm sure that was suppposed to be "mince," what the Americas would call ground beef.

Umm yeah it was, lol. :)
Ground beef seems a slightly odd term; it's probably literally true in some case, but you can get all kinds of meat/faux meats ground up so mince seems more encompassing.

Yeah man, I've been eating these lately. The best part about them is they're real easy and quick to make...and they're really good!

I'm kinda surprised they would be serving 'em in a cafeteria though...the one in my school probably wouldn't in a million years.

Does anyone know of a "meatless chicken" product that is vegan? I used to eat the spicy patties once in a while, but they all seem to have dairy in them. No biggie if there aren't, it's not like I ate them all the time! :)

YES! I think I've tried every brand and Quorn beats all their asses. The tenders are the best. A must-have in every veggie's freezer.

I like these too...esp the Chick'n Nuggets and the Chick'n Patties my mom makes into Chick'n Parmigiana so I don't feel left out from the family (b/c my mom is awesome like that. ;) ) :) You just have to be careful...I read in a magazine that some people are allergic to the mushroom protein that Quorn uses.
