I hate the way all these mass producing brands, mainly Hot Topic are putting Che Guevara and Bob Marley on all their tshirts. I mean, Che and Bob were great people but half of the people that buy the shirts probably don't even know what Bob Marley and Che Guevara stood for. They're probably just like oh this shirt looks cool I"m gonna wear it and not even know what it stands for. If you're gonna wear the shirt at least know who the people are and what they stand for. I went to the beach and I was walking down the boardwalk and every store was covered with Bob Marley, it was sickening to see these ignorant dumbasses with their lame trucker hats on to look at the shirts and laugh because he had a joint in his mouth. They're disgracing Bob Marley. THey're making him look like the only thing he ever did was smoke pot and make music. It makes me sick to see how ignorant as a society we are about iconic figures.
I love Che Guevara he's my rolemodel... of course I'm not following any trend I mean I know TONS about Che Guevara and I have many reasons why I like him... I liked him before the huge trend... my other role model is Nelson Mandela
yeah, I know how you feel. It's like there's this whole generation of rich white suburbanites who all wear trucker hats and clothes that look old. Like a generation of Ashton Kutchers(he's actually a very intelligent and note-worthy man. I'm just talking the looks.) Anyways, I just bought a Thelonious Monk T-shirt and I love wearing it. Everyone sees it and ponders why I have an old black guy on shirt they've never seen before. Makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I kinda gave this kid wearing a che shirt the other day a hard time. He didn't know the first thing about che, he said he bought the because it looks cool. How sad.
I hope that by having icons that stand for radical/counter-to-the-dominant-culture, we will come around to thinking of radical ideas on our own. If I am inspired by Che's dedication to the communist/populist revolution, or Marley's faith, I am inspired to work harder and keep truckin' for the causes I believe in. And there ain't nothin' wrong with long-haired male icons! Hayduke, let's get real. how many people on this board will get your name w/o having to think about it? How many have the Mother Earth News with Abbey and his rifle in front of a blasted TV on the cover. I did for years. GW Hayduke is an interesting snapshot of a time. But so was Bonnie Azbugg! I thought the folks in the People's Republic of Boulder were more open! ;P
I have no problem with the trend, as has been stated this will only lead more people to look into and learn more about che and bob. I myself baught a poster at a head shop, years and years ago, of che because I thaught it looked "cool" having no clue who he was, and it was having this poster on my wall and constantly looking at the image that led me to learn about his life. So my advice is just take it all in, give a chuckle when you see something ubsurd and just live the life that would do bob or che proud peace
I forgot to mention that I have known this kid for 5 years or so. I gave him a hard time because thats the way we are. Its still sad that che and bob are so overly commercialized now though. Bonnie Abzugg was awesome too.
I have been a Bob fan for as long as I can remember. I wasnt really suprised to see him all over everything in the mall but it seems rather odd to me. It is sad how once you die anyone can sell you out!!*It's a passing fad, in the 12th grade everyone at my school was buying soccer jerseys from goodwill, in the 9th grade everyone was wearing manson shirts.......... soon everyone will move on to something new!
I spent a few days in Thailand recently, and I was in big market in Bangkok where there were loads of Che shirts on sale. To be brutally honest, I really didn't know anything about Che until recently. And I still have a lot to learn about his life. So, I'd feel uncomfortable wearing a Che shirt. Actually, I see a lot of folks in Japan wearing Che stuff. And I see stores selling Che stickers. I think it's a fad that hopefully will die.
Ok, I take SOME or the ribbing back. Not much. I logged on to Denver Post regularly and they have ad pop ups. One was Argonaut Liquor with Marley's pic, Rasta colors and promoting rum. uhhhhhhhhh....... faithful Rastas don't drink. THAT shows commercialism. Folks who could get into studying the beliefs of these guys should be able to have an image, and if some dippy chick sees either, thinks they are good looking and starts to learn? well, I call that a good use of The Man. I seem to recall my first reading of Kerouac was precipitated by a comment in a Jim Morrison biography. Read a great quiote from Marquee magazine (that cheesy-looking one in the Boulder/Denver venues) from Tzol of Kan'Nal. He said Marley is a huge influence on the band. The band also incorporates a righteous message into its music. According to Tzol, he really wants to bring a positive message to the world. In fact, one of his biggest influences is Bob Marley. “Obviously we don’t play reggae music at all, but it lies more in how he was able to sing about love, unity and positive things and be completely successful at it. When I look at the mass of music out in the market right now, there is just not much being said. It seems like everybody has forgot we’re all connected to each other and to the earth and to the spirits,” he said. Kan’Nal hopes it can “counteract” the world’s negative energy and “bring something that lets people open up and feel good and dance and celebrate their life.” (From an article by Jeffery Smith) http://www.marqueemag.com/07_04/Kannal.html I'd add their Kabbalistc and peyote vision into this. Ellis... OK, how many young pups will get it? (ducks and runs to Group W bench)
Yeah seriously, and if Che knew big capitalist corporations were making money off his face, he would be rolling over in his grave, that goes against everything he fought for in his life... Peace and Love, Dan
I don't get it either. I really wonder if people know the history of both of them. A lot of people don't even know how they became revolutionaries. The reason why I wear Bob, is because I know his background and respect him as a person. He changed a lot of people's minds. he helped get back in touch with England after their independence; showing that they truly were independent and he definitely got the message about Rastafari out.
i guess maybe it can help them understand what they stood for, but there are other ways of doing that besides companies manufacturing products in huge buildings and making money off of them, and i think thats the reason it's going on- money
I'm with him. Who cares what reason people buy or wear things? Your reason is different from mine... ok, I accept that, as well as everyone else. I don't know, I just don't see this as being a major issue and so I don't care about it.
I know exactly where your coming from... It's so fucking annoying.. I mean one person looked at my che shirt and she thought it was fucking Bob Marley... This one guy had on a che pin and I asked him if he knew who he was and he said "i dunno but everyone else is wearing them." and fuck I got pissed... I mean come on.. why would you wear something when you have no understanding as to what it stands for or means...
It pisses me off too, for the simple fact that I am a teenager, and people look at all these idiots and some people actually think that's how all teenagers are. Something that does seperate us however, is that I actually DO know alot about Che Guevara.
yeah i do agree guys, however you have to accept these people and understand this is where they are at in their life. Many of these people are struggling to fit in and be accepted by their peers, and to wear such a shirt is a statement that they are 'cool' and following the trend. Even though i dont agree with the exploitation of such beautiful people, we should try to accept everyone for the trail they are taking in their lives. I know its hard, but we need to have a more understanding society. Well thats my bit. Conor Live Love Laugh
