Hello all! I'm off to Germany in a couple of months to work/live for a year. Now I've made this challange a little bit more difficult by not knowing any German, nor knowing any German people. Has anyone got any ideas as to which town I'd be best to go to to get work with little knowledge of German? Does anyone have any weblinks to places for accommodation (rooms for rent rather than hostels). And lastly any general tips and info would be appreciated also.
I'd go for Aachen, as it is close for to the netherlands. Also you might wanna go to cities that have American barracks. If you dont know any german, learn turkish and that'd be enough to survive in germany http://www.livingontheplanet.com/europe/de/
Hi! What do you wanna work here in Germany? Do you come from a firm? The big cities like Berlin are very multicultural. Almost everyone speaks a little bit English, cause we have to learn it in school. You can visit our German forum here and try to understand something. We will help you! If you tell me some details (where you wanna go, what you will work, where you want to live and so on) I`ll try to send you some interesting links. Just ask more detailed.
Nearly everybody in Germany speaks English, you'll have no problems with that, there's always someone who can help you Berlin is surely the most international German city, but it depends on what you want - rather a big city or living somewhere in a nice landscape at the countryside? If you don't already have a job i'd recommend moving somewhere to Bavaria, its easier to get a job here than in the eastern part. Munich is a very nice city, also very open to the world, but VERY expensive. Contact me via PM if you need more information
Thanks for your replies! I'm currently working in a bank in Dublin (I'm from New Zealand, but wanted to stop off here and earn some money before I arrived in Germany) so I could get a bank job if english ones existed. I'd also like to get work on a ski field if it was possible. This is where I'm a bit stuck. I'd love to work on a ski field which means I'd have to be in Bavaria, which is more expensive and ski field jobs probably don't pay that well. I could try and go to Berlin and work in a bank.....but will I have any luck with very minimal German language skills? I need to be where I can easily meet friendly and open minded people aswell.......I'm coming by myself so meeting people is very important also.
If you work at a bank then Frankfurt is the city of your choice. Every bigger German bank has its central in Frankfurt, with skyscrapers and everything, the main German stock market is there and the German and even the European central bank. And it is a very international city, too
Mind if I borrow your topic? I posted in Random Thoughts wanting to know some resources for apartment finding and which is the cheapest city but best environment to live in Germany. My dream is to move there, so I'm doing a lot of research. I speak enough German to converse pretty well, but I'm intent on learning more! I have MSN (melodica83@hotmail.com) and ICQ (299319492) if you'd like to add me, just mention in your authorization request that you're from HipForums (I've got tight spam control on my ICQ) Bis dann! Kate
Hi Kate, If you want a cheap apartment or house, move to eastern Germany. Land is really cheap there, but there are currently problems with getting a job; it depends on what job you want ... ? The most beautiful landscape is in my opinion offered here in Bavaria, but living is quite expensive here. In my neighbourhood, the square meter of land to build a house on costs about 1100€/$. Contact me via ICQ or MSN if you want have more information
Sure, feel free. I hope you get some useful info to help you. I write from a work computer so I don't have ICQ or MSN messenger unfortunately. Have you got any weblinks as to accomodation within Germany?
www.deutschland.de is a very useful page for all who wanna know more about our country and the way of living here.
