Well about four years ago I had jut broken up with a long term bf and I was talking to my friend Amber freakin out and ondering what I was gonna do with my life. She was lik Why dontcha come treeplnting. So I did. Its not in a greenhouse its in the forest where theyve logged a bunch of trees. We go in and plant baby ones. Its a really tough job. Theres bugs and rain and sun. You dont make that much when you first start either, it takes a bit. People get tendonitis in thire wrists, sore feet and sore backs. In fact right now I am injured. I was riding on the back of a quad and my finger got smashed btween the quad and the trailer. I saw the bone. I had to quad for an hour and a half in the rain through the mud till I got to a truck and then an hour and a half to the hospital. The companys taking good care of me tho. I'm doing stuff around camp, like cooking for a hundred bucks a day till I heal up. All that said I love treeplanting and wouldn't wanna do anything else. You have to leave your town to travel to remote areas in the wilderness for three or even four months a year. You don't wanna work for a bad company. There are lots. Make sure they have veg food if you are veg. Dont work for oless that 7 cents a tree. Check out www.tree-planter.com
I work in a rock bar. It's alright because you don't get bothered about them and if you don't mind smelling like a brewery.
I no longer whore myself out to corporate america!! I sew at home all day and sell clothes on my website and e-bay! I also watch two kids all day whice is more work that I did in my tiny ass cubicle at MJ Soffe, however, it is much more rewarding! I make decent money, hope to get a grant or a small business loan and open a store down town sometime in the next few years!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
funkyphresh: your job sounds a lot like mine!!!!! But I wish me and my old man could make a living from. We sell hippie goods, kynd merch, incense and glass pipes. I'm raising 5 children. Handful!!! So I understand that with 2 kids and the business its a lot of work!!! Your sewing has inspired me a lot to get off my ass and do stuff!!!! good luck with getting a loan and opening a shop.
i still dunno what im ganna do haha i havent started looking for my 1st job yet! i might work at a fabric store so i can get discounts there cuz i like to make things.
lol I mow lawns for people around my subdivison. They dont care wat i look like as long as I do it and do a good job.
Whoa, talk about digging up a dead thread. I'm currently a student who has taught and will teach. My hair isn't much of an issue though, as I follow a religious precept to keep my hair covered in public, and especially in the workplace. The issue I run into is a 'no hats' policy, which is easily circumvented with the religion card.
i have worked in a toy store. and currently i am going to work at a natural foods store in my town, where the rest of the hippies work. haha. try and find someplace like that, like a organic natural food place, a headshop... locally owned businesses. i've worked at a pizza place as a waitress and at a small ish bookstore. be polite, dress nicely, and it'll all work out.
I work in an office and my boss (a very conservative, very christian in the sometimes close minded way) actually told me to get my dreads.Somtimes I think she gets more exicited about my hair than I do, it's been...well since mid-october and she loves them. No one else in the company has a problem with them either, I was actually presented with the "Rookie of the Year" award for the entire corporate office. Just make a point to in your interview to focus on your goals of working there, be honest with them, and you'll get a job. You've had your dreads a long time? Try to make them a selling point for you, and your perspective boss, buy explaining that you have the ability to committ passionatly to something that may not always be easy. You can apply that to their business as well.
Well, I lot my job just before Christmas & been looking for I.T jobs since, I went in to see about joining a few agencies this week in my normal clothes, and when I went for the agency interviews I went in all dressed up in a suit & they seemed pretty impresed. I had my hair tied back & lost my piercings & they seemed fine with it. As long as you look smart & can do the job they I don't see what problem they have. The angency people did seemd suprised tho when I turned up in a suit !!! Just hope they find me a job soon !!!
Yeah there is that possability, I live in the Midlands & I actually got a job today with a Data Indexing compny working in an office. They didn't mind my dreads one bit & mine are below shoulder length, Its all about how you portray yourself & the way you dress. I don't know how you went dressed or anyting, but try going in Smart Casual !!! & tie your hair back (if you can) Worked for me & I normally wear jeans & t-shirts all the time with my hair down !!! I just wore some trousers & a sweatter with my hair tied back !!!
I am only 15, but I work at a library. It is amazing!Just try to forget about it being funded by the government (I feel so dirty jut thinkinging about it, but the way I see it is that the money would be spent wether i work there or not) try applying as a reference librarian or childrens librarian if you like arts/crafts! I am a page, but hat is only 8/h(where I work) you are older so you can do reference stuff. If you are good with computers(at all) then apply to a computer retail place, they are very easy to get in to and if you are good with computers it is even easier to move up. Hope I helped
very well said mama... I'm also a "professional" AND going completely natural! I wear my hair in a bun on top of my head and dress/behave very professionally. I use my mind, education and attitude to compensate for the birds nest atop my head :butterfly I try to keep my hair as neat as possible but I do get double-takes now and then.
my jobs hired me cause of my hair. one is a bakery and one is a local retail store. they like me to look "hip" i guess haha. one owner is super straight and he loves my hair. the other place has a dress code (not a uniform style, thank goodness lol), and in it, it says hair has to look natural. ... i kinda wanted to have to make the argument that mine is natural. haha. most people are nice to me and dont judge me. i guess because i dont look like someone who is stoned 24-7. and I let my personality matter most. once a lady was telling me how her waitress has pink hair and it disgusted her that they would allow that there. ... this is while i'm standing there ringing her up for a pair of jeans. ... it was really amusing.
Yea some of the places I applied for didn't hire me because of that. But I applied for other places where I have friends working who are the same age as me and wasn't successful
How did you dress, speak, and present yourself? It isn't about what you've done, or how well you've done it, or what you want to do. It's how you talk about all that, and how you present it. Namaste
