Amazed to discover that the restrictions on taking liquids on board planes leaving the UK are still in place... prompted me to do some reading about this supposed bomb plot which was the cause of this six month (so far) restriction on taking water onto a flight...

Very interesting (and well researched) Register article about the praticalities of making the explosive TATP on board a plane from liquid precursors:

Was the whole thing fiction? Some idle chatter about the possibility of doing this, but with no practical plans to carry it out..?

Well, surely it's a false sense of security (or of fear, depending which way you look at it), since the method in question is ludicrous and impracticable, and all the other methods of hijacking a flight are still as possible/likely as they ever were and won't be stopped by making people leave their Lucozade at home...

Aye, they don't check properly anyways.
I managed to sneak some dread wax onto the plane in my hand luggage without carrying it in a plastic bag.

The power of the storyteller. Not only do Hollywood re-edit historical events to suite a market for their films but they also have the ability of trying such things out like blowing up a plane as in an action sequence and causing mass panic. They are not only satisfied by this but they also have the ability to make it a reality as in the war on terrorism, whether this type of attack would be possible. Dare I mention the unmutterable but the attack on the World Trade Centre has now spawned its own market for the thirst of movies; brings us into a circle. After all that attack was something not far from unreality other than the fact it did happen.
