so, does anyone here care if David Cameron might have indulged in the odd spliff while at Eton? thought not.
I don't care at all. What I would hope for, however, is for him to be morally consistent on the matter. Instead of seeing it as a foolish mistake, which I'm sure he did not see it as when he was getting stoned, (the mistake was getting found out) he should put his spliff where his mouth is and call for legalisation....
I'm canny shocked at just how big the story is. Countless newspaper's front pages, top story on many news channels ect. I watched the news for about an hour yesterday morning and I haven't got a clue what else went on in the world that day!
I don't think it will dent his reputation that much, especially if he keeps his cool and does not lie. Scandal stuck to the Conservatives like flies to shit during the Major years, but it is less damaging, I'd say, when a party is out of office and such scandals do not fly in the face of their policies, eg. 'Back to Basics' and less damaging when a party is stronger rather than weaker. Now it's Labour's time for scandal and for self-destruction. I don't particularly want to see another period of Tory rule, though I doubt Cameron would be much worse than Blair. Moreover, when a party has been in power for so long, the electorate just want a breath of fresh air....
Have we forgotton about Bill Clinton's confession - without inhaling (yeah, right...) Let's not forget that the current great leader of the Western World, G W B is supposed to be a reformed substance abuser. I'm just wondering though if some of the substances he may or may not have abused actually fried parts of his brain. That would explain an awful lot....
Does he see it as a foolish mistake NOW. That is ok in my book. If he said it was a foolish mistake at the time. Then yeah i'd question him on that. We do not know if he was toking like a well seasoned pro or just once or twice. So do not know if after a few he thought it was a stupid mistake and the fact he got caught reinforced that. I do not think he he should call for legalisation. The majority of us have done something we would never do again. This seems to be the case with him.
It's all about context. If he was not a politician, then I'm pretty sure he would not see it as a foolish mistake. After all, it hasn't actually done him any physical or mental harm (over and above being a Tory). He sees it as a foolish mistake a) because he was exposed and b) because he's now a politician and exposure has such high risks. I would sincerely question his motivation for describing it as such. Getting caught was the foolish mistake, not smoking pot in the first place....
Well i've had LSD and i know that was a 'foolish mistake' even though I liked it at the time - prety much shortly after - I changed my opinion on it.. So I do get where he is coming from - if he is being honest. On the other hand I do see where you are coming from - cuz he probably is talking out his ass. I think he if he was honest he would probably just brush it aside and say ''yeah it was alright but I won't do it again''. Do we know how far that pole is up his ass ?... maybe he did see it as a 'foolish mistake' maybe he was not into 'into drugs'. Just because you and I might not see it as a 'foolish mistake' some people are a little odd. :H
But why did you see LSD as a foolish mistake? Was it because of the after effects? I can't imagine someone thinking years after puffing on a spliff that that in itself was a mistake, unless they were found out and it harmed their career. LSD might be slightly different to Cameron's case....
Because I could have jumped out of a window. Been arrested . Killed myself while walking in the middle of road. While I was 'safe' with friends it was the best thing since sliced bread. You just can't always plan how the experience will be - well I could not anyway. My mates an I were nuts when we were 'straight'. The added fragility of mind on LSD could have caused dire ok indirect consequences but consequences none the less. I just thought after I stopped taking it ''what a idiot''. No neither can I - think of a person [thinking it over - years later]. That is why I wondered when he had the revelation. Oh no I don't think he would have abandoned himself with LSD. No way would he admit to that if he had. Spliff is almost the accepted drug to have taken - with the least amount of ramification on a persons political career - it seems. As not many people give a shit -well aaprt from that teacher on Question time [from that'll teach em]. What a stooge he was. Did you see him ?.
I'd say it would be acceptable for him to declare it a mistake if he now passionately and firmly believed that cannabis is a major social ill or health hazard (over and above legal drugs like tobacco and alcohol). Then he might be able to claim that he had done something in his youth that he now disapproves of. This is possible, though I'd be sceptical. Most people with experience of cannabis would likely report it's relative innocuousness. I can only really think that it is the act of getting caught breaking a law that he has not publicly opposed or pushed to overturn, that he regrets....
Steady on. I just think he regrets taking it. I don't think he needs to denounce it as a evil of society etc. Has he said he dissaproves of people smoking cannabis ?. I do not think somebody needs to defend something they have never said. I dunno though dude - i have not heard everything he has had to say. Thank the lord.
