I have a copy of Nigel Calder's book The Weather Machine (1974) about how we were heading for a new Ice Age ...
I don't remember it, but that whole concept has always cracked me up. I still hardly believe in global warming... but that's a completely different topic.
You are both right... Do you remember the quote of "Marie Antoinette" "let them eat cake" ? Many years before she said this there was a warming trend in Europe, this led to areas being put into crops that had never been farmed before. More food, larger population. More mouths to feed.. Well the weather changed, call it a mini ice age. The peasants stormed the palace and said they had no bread to eat, because grain production had all but ceased. Marie having been kept in the palace, knowing nothing of the common folks plight, said '"let them eat cake". There you have it........
Whether she said it or not, is irrelevant. The global warming and cooling is a historical fact. In the same time period, Greenland which was being farmed (in south) went back to ice and frozen tundra.......
Apparently Nigel Calder didn't take man's influence into account Prior to the uplift of the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas 50 million years ago most of the world was hot and humid. After the uplift the earth began to cool and it was generally accepted (at the time) that the current warming period was only short-lived, eventually giving was to another Ice age. But it was only because of the reduction of greenhouse gases in the first place (due to the uplift) which allowed the earth to cool. now that the greenhouse gases are taking over again - the earth is warming.
