do you think that religion stops you from beeing free?.... WHY?...... whats different between religion and hippies?.... a lot of NEW AGEers consider themselfs kind of hippies.. what do you think?
No, I don't think so, basically what is religion? A system of belief and worship accompanied by a code of ethics and a philosophy. Some hippies/rainbows have their own system of belief and worship and a code of ethics and a philosophy but the ethics are usually situational ethics. Which one produces more feelings/emotional bondage? It probably exists in both forms. Bustramp
If you don't allow your beliefs enough freedom I think it does. I mean, if you try to use God to enforce your own personal opinions and values, like "God hates (so and so)"; "God says (etc.)" This ensnares other people, and consequently one's self. On the other hand, I find that religion can be liberating, because it can aid in transcending desire -- desires which can become very addicting/enslaving. I also think it aids the belief that "anything is possible", which is fruitful for the imagination. Whether or not hippiedom is a religion depends on what it means to be a hippie -- what is a hippie?
i personally dislike the concept of religion. mainly because it tells you exactly what to believe, what to do, when to do it, has so much power, and it divides the world i am not against people that like religion, i have no right to tell someone what to do or like. i believe that a person should believe what ever it is that they want to, interpret religion for themselves, and find God, Gods, or a higher power in their own way.
Indeed, I started to form my own philosophy baised on things I learnt from other religions. Like: Wicca: Your consenquences will be 3X stronger than your actions. Islam: If you save a life, it is the equvalent to saving the world. Take a life and it is like killing the world.
subscribing to another's beliefs is going in the opposite direction of freedom. whether you idolize one person, join a group, or even start your own, none of these are actions that lead to freedom-unless, by taking part in these actions, you see the falseness in them and discard them. in my opinion, (look for yourself-don't just accept what i am saying) you cannot collect facts that build up to a greater truth. you can only find truth through negation. discard all that is not truth, and that is all that is left.
Most of the time it seems to stop people from being free, yes. But it doesn't necessarily have to be the case. Some people seem not to limit themselves by the rules of their religion (but why would you still call yourself a follower then?). Most of the time religion keeps it's followers from having an open mind though, preaching certain stuff that only comes from one point of view. Difference between religion and hippies? Sometimes not much, a lot of hippies are followers as well.
Religion doesn't limit our freedom it gives our freedom the right way to use iT. To be faithful & free
Oh well, that's not the reason why I dislike it anymore. However I still don't like it that my mother tried to force it on me of course.
i think that when you feel you need to do things for your religion you would not do otherwise is the end of your freedom. i think people can join any religion out there and call themselve a hippie, wether you agree with it or not is a whole different question. i have embraced a lot of new age stuff myself, i feel it fits perfectly in my beliefssystem
yes i think certainly religion limits one's mind... but you can choose to limit it, it's your choice...
Hey man, think about this. The real question is, what do YOU think? I mean, you are the one who has to live with that... Do YOU think religion limits freedom? A lot of religions claim to open up NEW freedoms. So why don't you do some soul searching and find out what's right for you man? Check out the Philosophy/Religion forums, and see what ya think. Remember, Hippies are connected by very abstract ideas. There were a lot of great hippies who were catholics, muslims, protestants, bhuddists, atheists, hindu's, etc. It all depends on how you depict it. For example, I love Jesus and his teachings. I don't like the christian perception of Jesus though. I think it is way off. Jesus really was all about love and forgiveness. He calls himself the prince of peace, and says that God is Love. That's what it is all about to me man.
