How to tell your parents you smoke

Smoke weed and still live with your parents? With most parents, honesty is quite an important virtue. I was busted a few years back and my parents were disappointed with me, but they were mainly crushed by the fact that I was sneaking around and not telling them about my cannabis consumption. I stopped for a couple years and just started up again recently.

You will definitely get in less trouble if you yourself tell your parents you smoke cannabis than if they get a call from the police or a friend's mother. Of course everyone is different, and parents differ in their viewpoints and rules. If your parents aren't totally crazy, closeminded, and strict it might feel good to tell them you smoke so you don't have to sneak around. I told my dad I started smoking cannabis again and he is cool with it, but that was before I found this lovely article. If you intend to tell your parents, this might help.

Actually, it was the other way around. My dad admitted he still did occasionally, when certain family members came over to visit for holidays. He told me he quit for work for the most part, but then smoked with me the day he came out of the closet. Still asks every now and then.

 

Just to play the Devil's advocate here, it's perfectly likely that telling your parents that you smoke may result in your parents calling the police, since they feel they cannot handle this on their own and that the police are a force of good. This is most likely with parents who have no experience with drugs. This is actually quite likely to happen. A lighter case is, they might try to force you to go to rehab and just threaten with the police.

So... be careful.

I can't see how they'd be in line to call the police if you aren't hitting a bowl in their face or something. Though, one time I was standing right next to my mom while we were folding laundry together and I started hitting my bowl... and a few friends were also there. We were all in the basement and they were watching tv. Anyway, we got through three rotations before she realized we were smoking, because she was so focused on Dr. Phil.

Then she took my friend's weed and went upstairs and we didn't see her the rest of the night... didn't tell us she was going to bed or anything, then brought us chips at like 11pm... just out of the blue, then all of us were stunned. When she took it from my friend, (he's like.. the only black dude who regularly chills with me, since I live in one of those little redneck towns where there aren't many black folks and they're all related.) he started going "help a nigga out, my house burnt down and I sell it for lunch money" (which was true... his brother committed suicide and his house burnt down in the same year, and he had nowhere to live for awhile). The next day she gave me $20 for taking my friend's stash.

^ ya. just tell 'em, don't ask them. show respect, realize all the shit they are doing for you and all, but also realize you are the one directing your life. mutual respect, or at least mutually staying out of each others shit. easier for me to say because i'm not living at home, though....

 

that all nice and all if you have nice cool liberal parents an all, but my parents are card carrying rush limbaugh and bill orielly listening, suckers of george w satans' cock conservative republican douchbags, who will kick me out of the house if they find out i have sex with my girlfriend, let alone smoke herb. if you can tell them, awsome, but when in doubt, dont come out(with your weed habit)

 

Yeah, it's sort of a "whatever works for you, you know" kinda deal... personal preference, too.

 

taking a hit and then blowing it in your parents face is usually a pretty effective way of telling them you smoke.

 

My parents never really cared that I smoke weed. Right now they let me grow, which is pretty chill.

 

My parents tried pulling that on me when I was sixteen, and it's a whole lot harder to deceive the police and the mental health system than it is to deceive one's parents. It paid off eventually because I met some of my best connections in rehab.

 

On my case, by now... I have no idea, if my parents know I smoke. I smoked in my room, mostly with the window open, for what it's worth. It's quite likely my father smelled it. It's also quite likely he didn't recognize it. And my mother lived separately. Father did have some new woman over occasionally... dunno if she could tell what it was. I've never told them, they've never mentioned it. Works fine for me.

My grandpa, though, once told all my previous classmates that his grandson "did drugs". And everyone there recognized him as my grandfather. So... can't be sure. Life's full of mysteries.

I always said to myself that if my parent's asked me if I smoked I'd tell them the truth, they never asked though and now I'm on my own. I found out my dad smokes recently though.

 

EXACTLY. I've got that kind of relationship with my mom, so one day I just handed her my pipe and told her I always thought it was better to be honest with her. She told me to not drive and not get caught, and that was about it.

I'd say that parents will either be pretty cool with it or will be really against it, so it's a matter of judging what side they'd fall on. If you really can't be sure, you're probably part of an unlucky minority.

i eventually told my parents because i was tired of hiding it from them and tired of lying. i did this a couple of years after i moved out of their house and was in college, so it wasnt like i was still under their "rule."
i pretty much said it as a "just so you know..." thing. i remeber being at some Irish Pub with them and having a few pints (in the midwest US, not actually in Ireland) and talking for about 2 hours ALL ABOUT WEED. i told them different ways of smoking, how bongs work, how it´s available, how much it costs (actually, I was a little vague on this because they were blown away by what i first told them - the price of schwag. i didnt need to talk about the price of bud at the time ;-), etc. I told them everything i could about it. I wanted to show them that it´s something that i know a lot about and dont necessarily think of as a "drug." one of their classic rebuttles used to be "yeah, but how do you KNOW that it´s true?" that´s why it can be important to at least seem to be knowledgable about it in all aspects. then you can start to turn their ignorances into actual knowledge.
