Almost every health food I store I visit in the Atlanta area seems to have only one or two purely vegan meat alternatives. Some don't have any at all. The obvious brands like morningstar, gardenburger and quorn all have milk and/or egg derivatives. Can anyone suggest some brands that are 100% vegan (and that taste good, too)?
i think tofurky is vegan, i used to love their 'sausage', they were better than the real thing probably.
Make your own! Do a search for recipes. I found this awesome recipe for a spicy black bean burger. It is not as firm as the store bought burgers but it tastes a lot better. As for brands, Boca and Gardenburger do have a vegan burger if you can find it. I am not sure about other meat substitutes though. I usually just make my own now.
most seitan is only gluten and flavorings. you can do your own and freeze it. I do feel for vegans wanting a veggie burger. is it Boca that has one? I seem to remember it was pretty good, esp on a grill.
There's a Boca organic vegan that I pick up every once in a while. It's allright. I mean, it tastes good but it doesn't fill me up like a homemade bean burger does. Pretty much the same thing though.
the ones we carry at the store i work at are: -tofurkey -yves -(some)health is wealth -(some)amy's -(morningstar) vegan prime grill -soy boy
where i am morningstar, boca, yves, gardenburger and veggie patch all making vegan veggie burgers available in most regular grocery stores. and i think they are as good as any non-vegan veggie burger. i suprised to hear this is not typical.
boca offers a vegan soy texture burger and a vegan chicken type burger...i recommend both as they r to die for!!
Not all Gardenbuger and MSF products contain dairy or eggs. Gardenburger cutlets, riblets and chik'n patties are all Vegan, plus they make a Vegan version of the traditional Gardenburger and a Vegan burger alternative. MSF Meal Starter Steak and Chik'n Strips are also Vegan.
Homemade seitan is excellent - there's a really good recipe in the cookbook "Vegan with a Vengeance" I also make homemade bean burgers. Mmmm...
