hello, ive been wanting dreads for years, and ive decided to start the journy:)
right now if i dread my hair from the top the dreads will b about 4inches long (which is very short) my hair is a bit shorter than that on the sides, so im waiting another month or two before i start dreading.

    my plan is:
-waiting till my hair is long enough
    -buying Aloe Vera
    -Rubber Bands
    -Lice Comb

(im not using wax at all)

im going to take a shower, wash my hair with Bar soap.
palm roll my hair, back comb a bit.
Section my hair. take one rubber bant off at a time, and twist and back comb a lot, adda bit aloe vera and continue. then do the whole head...

    GOOD IDEA?! any suggestions?!

My suggestion is to just stop combing and wash with residue-free soap. In a few years you'll have amazing nattys.

I backcombed mine, really it's not a bad method. Good if your still at school or if you don't have the time.

Don't knock it. I backcombed and left it to dread. A good tip is to rub it in circles with a towel (one that won't shed).

I washed my hair and just plain backcombed it with a metal dog-comb.

I backcombed a lot of my hair (If you don't want it to fall out you have to do it really well...for me this meant spending hours on each individual dread. But I have shoulder length hair.) and got sick of it towards the end. I just left the back to do it's own thang. It's been alllmost a month now. The ones I spent time on vary a little. The small ones dreaded up really nicely (I mean the tips unraveled, but whatever.), the fat ones are super loose so I have to work with those more. the stuff I'm letting go natural is a complete rats nest but it's coming along.

If you want it to look like dreads faster, and are willing to spend a ton of time and energy on it then go ahead and backcomb. At your length it'll probably fall out though. And DON'T USE RUBBER BANDS for anything other than sectioning! That's just asking for mold.

What kind of soap are you using?

u probably think im stupid, what exactly do u do when u backcomb? ive never saw n e one do it.

im not sure yet, what kind of easy to find affordable soap do u recommend, suitable for dreads?

Take a section of your hair, use a comb with very close teeth (like a dogs flea comb), tease (or back comb) your hair by taking the comb and comb the section of hair backwards. (ask a chicky to show you)

If you want (or need) your hair to look like dreads sooner, then backcombing is a good option. I backcombed... and yes, some do fall out, but unless you have a job or a school that really doesn't care if you wear a hat or have crazy hair, then backcombing is a better solution.

Mine are about 8 weeks old and my tips are coming apart and looking very frizzy (even with aloe) ... They are kind of at an annoying stage for me right now...

    You don't need rubberbands.

PS - don't use wax. First and foremost, you don't NEED it. Secondly wax is not water solubile... which means unless you get the water so hot it MELTS the wax out, the wax will stay with you forever. Who wants candlesticks in their hair?

yea no wax or rumbberbasnds.. backcomb or not doesnt matter, but as for soap..best is dr bronners luiquid
next best would be knotty boy maybe
never tried dreadshq's but hadnt heard anything great about em, but certainly the best & probly cheapest is bronners since dr bronners is very concentrated & can be diluted many times

When are you starting hebrewnational00? I might start with you. My plan's like this.

    -stop combing
    -wash with dr bronners
    - enjoy the journey

im just going to take a shower (i never use conditioner anyways)
and then let my hair get damp-dry...and then ill sections it with rubber bands, take one rubber band of a section, twist n backcomb, till my whole head is done.
