Ok, here is the deal. I'm a senior right now and I've applied to college. I applied to St. Cloud State, and Winona state university. Me and my friend planned on going to college together but he got accepted to St. Cloud and nt winona, but I got accepted to Winona and not st cloud.

    So here are my options.

    1. Go to a community to college for a semester or so then transfer to St. Cloud.

    2. Do some sort of "probationary deal" where I go there but I'm limited in the classes I can take and I need good grades for a semester.

    3. Try to do better on my ACT, I got 23 without studying and if I get 25 I automaticly get into st cloud.

    4. Just go to winona alone or try to get my friend to get 1 pt higher on his ACT.

    5. Take a year off, go to community college/travel/make money.

First, don't go to a school just because your friend is going. That's lame and I think it limits you socially...

Second, I always, always, always, ALWAYS suggest a person go to community college first before going to a university. For a few good reasons...one, required classes are pretty universal, wouldn't you rather spend LESS money on those required classes at a community college rather than paying full price at a university? Second, most people don't know what they want to do when they first enter school. By going to community college you are spending less money on classes that might not actually go toward the degree you will end up getting. Lastly, community college is a good transition between highschool and university. I think it sort of weans you into the whole independent learning thing instead of being dropped right into it at a university...

Wow thanks, I'm kind of smart but I have really poor study habits. That's the main reason I'm considering community college.

And my friend going to st cloud isn't the only reason I want to go there, I visited there and really liked it, but haven't looked at winona yet, plus winona is twice as far away. I hear winona is the better school though.

I'm a big proponant of community colleges. I had a great time at the CC I went to...and hated the university I went to...

I loved going to class at my CC and got awesome grades...the professors were more personable and cared about the students (university professors a lot of times care more about their research than the students)...then I went to the university and hated almost every second there...of course, everyone's different. I didn't live on campus at the university, so that was probably part of it too...

    Good luck with your decision.

I'd say go to community college beforehand as well. I had that option, but chose to go to a university because I though the classes would be better, the social life would be better, etc...But I kind of wish I went to a community college to not only ease myself into a different kind of education, but also because we would have saved a lot of money...and the classes are NOT different. If you want to learn, it doesn't matter where you're learning, or if your friend is there or not, that's what college is about.

I say go to your community college. I LOVED community college! Classes are way smaller and it is a hell of a lot cheaper. I like the University I go to, but I'd go back to the community college any day if they gave out BAs or BSs.

I agree with everything that's being said about the community college. Would you be going to RCTC, then? Just a though, it sounds like you're in that area.

On another note, I grew up in the area of Winona State and spent a lot of time there. It's a pretty good school, and it's an awesome campus, not to mention Winona is a great city.

Don't start at community college. You would be missing out on a year of meeting students on campus, joining clubs, and getting to know professors. Networking is a major part of college; it helps get you into a graduate program or into a job.

I networked plenty going to university for two and a half years...so that's not necessarily true.
