Did anyone get a letter after they signed up? I just found my thing the other day when I was filing some papers, and I read it. It said something about them sendind a confirmation. Which I never recieved, and I turned 18 just over 2 years ago. Do I need to keep that original thing telling me to register? It also says to keep them up to day on address changes, opps. I'll forget that by the time I move in a few months. But I'm sure they can find me if they want me.
I hope they bring back the draft....the sooner the better. I hope I won't need to explain my reasoning on that one. Midget...why do you give two shits about your "confirmation" letter or whatever? If they want to find you they will.....ever fill out a post office change of address form? Anyway, I registered when I was 16 because back then I had planned to go in the Air Force as an officer anyway. Thankfully I chose a far different path in life.....I support the warriors but not the war. I can't identify with these people who completely deride the troops as willing killers and what not though some are. Now I do agree that there should not be a standing army in peacetime but unfortunately these poor souls actually thought they would be doing a great service to their fellow citizens, and not to Halliburton's profit margins. We need to reexamine the role our 2nd amendment has in ensuring our national security through the use of militias, our very Bill of Rights that is rapidly dissappearing relies on it. PEACE
You might find some useful information with Debbie at mothersagainstthedraft.org. I know I was conflicted when my kids "signed-on" too. Don
The Military Draft began May 18, 1917, under the office of Woodrow Wilson and ended July 1, 1973 when the all volunteer military started. That will be 34 years this coming July. No one has been drafted into military service since ( most of you who are worried about it) before you were born. If you are still in school on your 18th birthday, you wont have to do anything, your school counselor will put your name on the list for you. Without even asking you. As said in earlier post, I agree. A draft would pull in untrained, uneducated, lazy, riff-Raff. Just the types that our armed forces need,,,NOT...... At this time the Selective Service System employees 157 full and part time employees. Most data entry personell, hardly enough to be sending out draft notices. The old days of Judges giving guys a choice of prison or the army are long gone. If you have a record the military wont have you. Now if Im wrong, there was a guy in my basic training company, a draftee, who pissed his bed everynight. Within a week he was called into the CO's office and we never saw him again. Asked my drill sargent what happened to him, he told me he got a ticket home. " Theres just no place in this mans army for bed wetters".
You have a very valid point Alaskan. I don't expect to see a draft. My issue however is with the principals of the selective service system existing at all, not specifically being drafted personally.
Eeso: Thanks for listening... I do think that the lists are kept for emergency man power in case of emergency here. Medical personell, engineers, etc....For such disasters as Catrina. When I turned 55 I was contacted by the Dept of the Navy and was told I was longer being carried on the rolls of their reserve officers . I was too old. Thank you..... Yes, was in the army when I was a young man. Later on I sailed in the Merchant Marine, starting off as deck hand and rising to the position as Capt. (ships master). When you get licensed by the Coast Guard, you raise your and hand and take an oath. The same one you take when you take when you go into the armed forces. So just wanted you to know, there's a lot of lists.... .........................Dennis..............
One thing that worries me is that there has been talk about "gee, let's draft everyone. Those that aren't sent to war can work in schools and hospitals for their two years." This idea, mostly comming from the left-leaning types, sounds nice, and I'm sure that the corporations running the hospitals would love the slave labour. I'm not sure how the teachers or janitors would feel about it.
