I'm taking Swedish right now and debating whether or not I want to start taking Icelandic next year (while continuing Swedish, of course). Does anyone else have any interest in North Germanic languages? I'm wondering how useful it is to learn Icelandic since only a few hundred thousand people speak it, but I hear that it is pretty close to Old Norse.

I am fascinated with your studies.....so cool!!
My mother's german, and I have relatives from different regions, so linguistics has been an interesting subject for me....unfortunately, I cannot answer your question.

I have read old english and middle english texts......i know old english is very closely related to northern germanic.

What is your major, by the way? and have you read the Kalivala????
I think it would be cool to learn icelandic JUST to learn it..
