Bela has her first cold. She is 8 weeks old and I feel so bad. She got my cold, which was horrible. Drainage, sore throat, runny/stuffy nose. I called her Dr yesterday and never got a call back so I took her to the Urgent Care and they gave me a script for drops that he said would dry up all the mucous. I don't know whether I should give them to her! Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this cold a little more bearable for her and me. I thought about giving her infant tylenol but it only has the dosage for babies over 3 months. She weighs enough but I don't think she is old enough yet. I also bought her some of that Johnsons and Johnsons vaper bath but it also says over 3 months old on it. What should I do???
I know with Moire, I've upped her vitC intake, given her echincea, zinc, and garlic pills. Pushing lots of fluid intake (nursing), and then just rest (for both of us). *Hugs* Oh yeah, and have her sleep elevated. Vicks baby rub is a good one. It's not too harsh but gets the job done.
How would I up her vit c intake or give her echinasia, zinc, or garlic pills? I've been trying to nurse her more frequently but she doesn't want to.
Hey Spiral... That first cold is always a heart breaker, isn't it? Something that always works fabulously when Leo has a cold(I was afraid to use those harsh presciption meds too!) is Lemon Balm tea. Lemon Balm is an herb with very strong antiviral(common cold is a virus) and immune boosting properties, and is also very calming, a mild sedative. But it is super safe... It's a kind of mint, and because babies have such sensitive systems you can use very diluted amounts and still have marvelous effects. I used it on Leo when he was really tiny... I can't remember how young, but I'm sure that in the small amounts required it would be perfectly safe for your little Bela. It has the benefits of all the suggestions HippyFreek made, but is easier and milder for a baby as young as yours. You can find Lemon Balm tea in bag or loose leaf in almost all healthfood stores, it's very common. Brew it like you would regular tea, but allowing extra time to steep so that all the good medicinal stuff gets in your brew. It has a very pleasant taste, naturally sweet tasting... Leo liked it. I'd use a medicine dropper and drip it in his mouth while it was still warm and he'd swallow it right down. He'd drink about a tablespoon at a time a few times a day, and that did WONDERS for his colds, and allowed him to relax. It's amazing stuff, and like I said takes only small amounts and is easy to get into a little baby... Warm nice tasting and smelling liquid. You drink it too! It will help zap any residual virus in you and help you relax as well, which all moms need when their babies are sick. Best of luck!
Awww, poor little Bela! It's so hard seeing your children not feeling well, breaks your heart! My childrens' ped always recommended to keep their heads elevated while lying down when congested, so if you're laying her down, put something under whatever she's laying on to keep her head higher than her feet. I hope she feels better.
I don't think I would give an 8 week old child echinacea or garlic or any over the counter meds but I understand your frustration at her being sick and you feeling helpless...you just want these poor litttle beings to get better. You have to realize that her immune system is already at work fighting off her cold and the best thing you can do is nurse and rest. Every time Evan started to get sick, we would just do that and he's fine every time! Also, I heard a humidifier helps but it's already humid here so I never used one! Here's some Get well wishes to you and Bella!
