Hey everyone, I have braces and im having a bit of a problem. I had the left side of my lip pierced, and I did that myself because my rents wouldnt let me get it done. They told me that if i took it out I could get it done professionally cuz they dont want me to mess up my lip. So I went about 2 weeks ago to a piercing shop, and got my lip(Middle) pierced. After the swelling had gone down a few days later, I noticed that my piercer had pirced it really high on my lip, like right next to my lip line,(He marked my lip with a line rather then a dot and I guess he decided to put it up high) I didn't like that, and I went back to see how long id have to wait for him to repierce it lower, He said two weeks if I took it out then and its been about a week.
I was wondering if anyone can answer these questions for me.
    1. Is the hole supposed to go stright back through the lip, because mine seemed to go up at an angle from outside to inside and I didnt think that was right.
    2. about how low should I be able to have the hole to still be able to keep a hoop in it instead of a stud?

I know having braces and a labret piercing probably isnt the best idea, so I dont really want anyone to tell me its stupid or anything, please.
Although if any of you have/had a labret with braces,
    1. How badly will it mess with my braces? So far with the two lip pircings I have had its done nothing bad with them.

    Thank you in advance :)

Everyone's anatomy is unique to them, and as such, completely straight, symmetrical piecings are rare. Both my top lip and my tongue are assymmetrical, but healed perfectly well.

Again, without seeing you and piercing it myself, it's impossible to say, as we're all different. Rings come in different sizes, though, so it isn't a problem; just buy one that fits your piercing.

Keep the stud in for the duration of the heaing process, though; it will heal quicker, cleaner and generallly beter than it would with a ring.

Never worn them myself, but I suppose it is reasonable to assume you may get 'caught up' from time to time.

    Hope this helps!

If you have a vein running down the centre, you will never be able to have a competely central piercing, so don't expect miracles; like my post above says, bodies are all different.

I dont think I have a vein running down the center. And I know what you mean about all bodies being different, It's just this last one wat not just off center, but VERY off center, to me and a few others at least.

Perhaps you ought to go to more reputable piercers, then?

I take it you mentioned the problem you had with the first piercing with your most recent one?

Yeah, and the first one was in the correct place(In the middle, just not low enough) and he said he was going to pierce it right under it so he drew a line down from it, and it was straight from what I remember and He had alla that cleaned up before I even got to look at it. It looked in the middle till I got home and really got to lookin at it. and the place I have been goin is the #2 most reputable place in the town I live in. The #1 most reputable place wouldn't do it cuz of my braces.

I am not saying that this piercing is stupid.. and I am not critizing you at all. I am just informing you. I am a dental professional and I can guarentee you that by the time you reach 20 to 25 years of age you will suffer complications from this piercing. It can cause periodontal disease(gum) because metal is a bacteria trap and it harbors millions of bacteria. Since this is right by your mandabular anterior teeth it will ABSOLUTELY cause you gums to receed ( meaning the teeth will appear longer ) and that CAN lead to bone loss, loose teeth, and maybe even the loss of the teeth. I see this often. Many young people have to get gum grafts because their gums receed so badly .. . I just want to warn you and tell you to be careful. Also, braces are also bacteria traps. If you do not floss while you have braces that is also asking for gum disease . I just hope you have good periodontal genetics and have good oral hygiene

Yeah, im a hygein freak lol, and I always make sure my piercings are cleaned by 100% of my ability. Esspecially my lip. Anyways, yes I have heared of gum and teeth problems, and thank you for your concern. :) I've made my decision though. im going to go through with it one more time. and I'm smart enough to take it out if things start getting bad with my gums and teeth, I've heared of lots of people waiting too long, but im a bit smarter then that.

Then in that case, sorry to say, you should be following his advice, and wait til the braces are off. He has a good rep for a reason.

Don't settle for second best where punching holes in your face is concerned; you may just walk away from the chair with more than you paid for, if you take my meaning...

Rar1013: I Mean you no disrespect at all, but you are the kind of person that gets things like piercing demonised by the media. You made a massive and largely incorrect generalisation; not all people will suffer with their teeth or gums after oral piercing, and many never suffer at all.

I should know; I am one of them. I am almost 30, I went to the dentist for the first time in 5 years recently, and he said I didn't need a thing done. I haven't had a sinlge filling since I had my orals. My gums are healthy, and I have nothing more serious than a very minor chip.

Blows your (inaccurate and rather irresponsible, if I may say) theory out of the water somewhat, doesn't it?

In short, if you know what you are doing, and so does your piercer, there is no reason any damage will occur. Please stop scaremongering.

I'm not scaremongering..I had my tounge pierces for five years and suffered from many of the things above..that is why i said some people have good genetics on their side.....but..something like 50 percent of people w/ tatoos and piercings suffer effects from it..and i happen to be one..and i see them monthly in our practice...i do not want to argue or call each other names..that is not how i roll..i do not do that....it was just an honest caring and thoughtful warning.....i like to help and serve others w/ my knowledge

I have to ask: how much have braces changed? in 77-82 (yeah, long, slow work, lots of moving. My roots are in different areas codes from my teeth) braces had wires that did not allow flossing, so most patients had waterpiks.

what about softer backings? My 15 y-o wants a labret for his 16th, and i'm inclined to say yeah, if I can find a gum/tooth friendly option.

They do have ones with plastic backings, but you shouldn't use thoughs at all cuz it can attract infection... Esspecially with new piercings and with plack build up from the braces. I can floss but use this little tool thing, and honestly, once i've gotten my labret pierced correctly, even with the braces it's been fine. No messing with them or anything. Even with the metal backing. Honestly I really see no problem with it, but as others have said every one is different so it could all effect your son a lot differently.
