Soo my best friend and I are moving out on our own, into our VERY OWN apartment (basement suite) in a week, and have decided to do an India theme in the living room. Here are my ideas: We got a few silk throw pillows (lavender and shimmey, and gold) and candles (fushia, and gold) and I think I'd like to stay mainly with those colors. I was at this beautiful Indian resatuarant a while ago and they had saris draped all over the ceiling, which i love. I don't think we can paint the walls :(

I'm sure we can just go to Indiatown and pick up some things, but I was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas for the place? Thanks a bunch, love and peace :)

I'm doing the same thing with my room. I'm making a canopy out of sari material to go over my bed, you could do the same thing with a wall hanging. Also, try to add little details, like a little statuette or something like that. Incense creates mood as well. Another suggestion would be to use the gold as a base color, and perhaps reds, purples, and pinks as accent colours. Orange also looks very good.

i got this store by me called Greenfield's-everything is made in india there-tho i dont know if you have one by you...
if you aren't allowed to paint the walls, you could always drape curtains or sheets over them, thats what the pple in my sis's dorm do...
and believe it or not, you can find great things in dollar stores...my mother found these two great lamps with india-elephants for the bases for only $8 each! and theres alwalys a chance of getting lucky at a thrift store
    good luck! :D

gold, lavender and fuchia... you need a dark to anchor those (jewel tone purple would be my choice, but red might overdo. Maybe sapphire. Even a black.).

what sort of furniture are you planning on acquiring?

Right now the Aisan influence is easy to find in higher-dollar stores, so surfing some web sites might net you grand ideas.

a word of advice, be easy with the decor items that occupy table of shelf space: they are fun until you have to clean around them. I've seen items grouped on a mirror with a slight rim. The person who cleans picks the mirror up to wipe off the table. The mirror gets cleaned about every two weeks. It does get a bit dusty, but this method allows all the spills and usual cleaning to happen fast, then the mirror is a veg with a movie activity.
I'd go with things that really make impact and fewer of them.

for wall art, most Krishna Temples sell that odd lurid-but-it-works prints of various gods and goddesses.
even all posters could have some interesting stuff.

yeah get a big hookah for the middle of the room- that would be cool. you could also staple gun big strips of fabric to the ceiling (i did this in my room) in shiny golds and purples, have them drape down over the corners of the room to make that softer lounge-type look.
it sounds like it'll be excellent, post pictures when youre done!

I would also add some houseplants to your home...they give off a wonderful, exotic feeling. Just make sure they get enough light but not direct sunlight. We have a peace lily in our living room and its doing great! I just water it once a week. Bamboo is also very easy to take care of and it comes cheap if you buy it at the flea market.

Please post pictures! Id love to see the room youre decorating!

If you plan on having a coffee table in your living room, you could put floor cushions with an indian type fabric around it. If you can't find floor cushions or find they are pricey you could either find normal cushions and cover them with indian style fabrics or make your own. you could also use the same style of materials as throws for your couches if you plan on having them, or perhaps use the fabrics for curtains. Elephant ornaments would also be good.

Congrats on moving out!! It's so exciting - nothing is like that first year of having your own place, being free of parent restraints. It sounds like a great apartment, just be patient - it takes time to make it look just how you want it to, acquire all the right stuff and have the time to incorporate it. I've been living on my own for about 5 years and I still don't have the place exactly how I want it, it's like a never-ending project.

Like to see pictures, if you've got 'em.

    Kind mama, can you paint?
what about sand/ lion tawny walls with masks and mudcloth?
thin bamboo roller blinds and perhaps the fabric draped from ceiling to walls bit (think temts or mosquito nets)?

that sounds really nice drumminmama! I can def. paint and started looking at paint colors yesterday. i kinda want to do the walls a tannish/brown color or kinda light green (an earthy green) and maybe a rust color in the adjoining room.

yeah, I'd go with what is called iron oxide red in Basics (acrylics for art-- a sandstone red) lightened a bit or as a wash for the rust room.

use the greens as accents: throuw pillows, throw rugs, etc.
