Hi all, just a quick quick question, what's the diffrence between 'liberal' and 'ultra-liberal'? I noticed on this forum you've got the option of choosing your own political idology. I went for liberal myself, because I am... I'm of the opinion that people should be allowed to do whatever they want provided no one gets hurt. To me, people that think the same way would also be 'liberal'. so in that case, what's diffrent about being 'ultra-liberal'? Try and give me some examples of something's an ultra-liberal person might do or think that a liberal person would not. Thank you
It depends, really. The idea that people should be able to do whatever they want as long as it doesn't hurt anybody isn't liberal at all, that's the way libertarians feel, and libertarians are pretty "conservative" on the left/right scale. A lot of liberals are opposed to "freeness" and want more government restrictions imposed, like Joe Liberman and the Gores for example. At the same time, there are "conservatives" who feel the way you do, like John McCain, he's definitely not a liberal. Being 'liberal' is a little more complicated than just social freedom, which I don't think is inherently liberal. But to answer your question, I guess being 'ultra liberal' as opposed to 'liberal' has to do with how far you want to socialize the government. In a purely economic sense, fascism (an almost completely privatized economy) and communism (an almost completely federalized ecomony) are the yin and yang of politics, and the bigger you want the government to be, the more liberal you are. A liberal (take John Kerry) would want the government to provide services like health care welfare (or increaced welfare, since conservatives provide that as well), and use some amount of protectionism to make sure that American made products are competetive, while an 'ultra liberal' would take those things a step farther and want as much government as possible to regulate and control as much as possible. Hope that helps. I consider myself middle of the road, sort of by default since I can't say I agree with either side's way of looking at things.
Hahahaha, now I'm so confused!!! I guess what I thought liberalism was, is not the case at all LOL. OK, I'm not 100%, but I think I'm probally liberal then... (that's 'left' right?) I'm very slighly left of center. Man this is confusing... I hate politics LOL But thank you for answering the question
Heh, yeah, that's the case with a lot of people. A better way of finding out where you stand politically would be the political compass: http://www.politicalcompass.org It's a step above the left/right scale, but I do have a gripes about it. Take the test, and it'll give you a better idea of where you stand. Oh yeah, and left is liberal..........
Thank you for the link, it's a bit late for me to be answering complicaed questions atm, but I'll give it a whirl tomorrow and see what happens. If it ends up extreme right wing I won't be happy tho LOL... That's SO NOT me
I have taken that, it has been posted tons of times. I have some problems with the questions as I'm sure others do. I'm not certain what the difference is supposed to mean on here either because I suppose it would depend on your perspective. I mean if you are ultra conservative then you might considers someone who is just democrat or liberal, ultra liberal because in their eyes you are. I think it is more of a circle than a line though... because eventually you get so far left that you are right. That is pretty much why I don't consider myself ultra liberal. When I think of ultra liberals I think of a lot of people who want revolutions, militias etc (there used to be a lot of those here on this board bout a year and half ago). There are some communists here I do believe and those who are extremely socialist, or at least they claim they are, I would say they are more liberal minded than I am. It isn't really a black and white issue, there is a lot of gray matter in between. I don't like labels so much, but well, we need them to live.
OK, I've just completed the test, I ended up here: http://www.digitalronin.f2s.com/politicalcompass/questionnaire.pl?page=printable_graph&X=-4.50&Y=-3.59 Now I'm actully quite happy with that result, it seems reflect who I am - although I didn't understand all of the questions, and I'm sure that I got a few of them wrong - but I've ended up where I wanted so I'm happy. What impressed me the most was that I'm in almost the same general spot as Nelson Mandella, Gandhi, and The Dalai Lama - who I admit I know very little about - but am now going to research into. Anyway, I don't think I'm actully any closer to understanding any of this... I don't think I ever will... all I know is that while it might be viewed as a wasted vote, I think from now on I'm going to vote Green.
LOL, Yay another Greenie! I'm Green as well. Just make sure you get all of the information you can on everything we stand for before you vote. As much as I love to hear more people becoming involved in the Green Party, I also like to hear people are just interested in politics in general. Here is someplace to start. http://www.gp.org/ And while I'm a Green Party member and actively involved in the local Green Party here in Delaware and on campus, I'm not voting for Cobb this election, I don't think. I think I'm voting for Nader. There are many other Greens out there who are voting for Kerry. Check out all of the candidates before you make a decision. And good luck!
LOL, if only the US's Green party and the British Green party were the same Being over here in the UK, our Green party is diffrent, but I will take your advice and look into their policys more (although I did a few months ago back when we had our local and european elections - and indeed voted for them then). Here's the british green party site: http://www.greenparty.org.uk/
To me....in a nutshell....a Liberal is someone who would rVote for Kerry and support him to defeat the president. An Ultra Liberal would be the one outside the polls protesting the two party system, and the "Ultra Ultra Liberal Anarchists" would be the one burning down the building with the polls, and smashing in their windows, haha. Although, in this election there will probably be A LOT of "Ultra Liberals" or whatever you wanna call em...Voting for kerry to defeat Bush. Peace and Love, Dan
I used to think that I'd be more likely to vote Democrat than anything else, but ya know...after visiting the Green Party's website, I think that I'm a Greenie too! They support all of the issues that I support, and everything...thanks for sharing that link! I think I finally know where I stand in politics, as far as parties go.
Angel, I disagree with you. But a lot of people think the way that you do. I don't think that democrats are liberal at all. They are more liberal if you can call it that than republicans , but I wouldn't consider them "liberal". I think that basically most republicans and democrats are pretty much in the middle and disagree on a few issues here and there but basically want the same thing. I think liberals would be more like 3rd party voters and again the ultra liberals would be more like anarchists and those who want to rise up and start a revolution. Sometimes I get angry when lumped together with democrats because I don't think they are liberal enough. Oh well I get over it.
uh-oh! did they change some questions? THEY MUSTA! i've moved left. egads! i've been infected! i'm still libertarian leaning, though. Economic Left/Right: -1.38 Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -4.15
I'd shoot myself before EVER being a true liberal or a true conservative. both sides blow donkey dicks. Fuck them all. gads....I am really pmsing...I need to go before I call Huck and Rat assholes for the 50th time tonight.
she'sa moderate / independent. on some things she's conservative, on other's she's liberal. that's the beauty of not automatically aligning yourself with a side, you can make decisions based on individual issues. yeah, but i think they've improved some of the questions on that poll site. i remember takign that quiz before and reading some of the questions and going "WTF kind of reactionary bs is this?"
