yellow jackets and hornets are the most ill tempered critters, they'll sting you just for looking at them wrong. I've been stung on the foot by them and it hurts like the dickens, I'll take a bumble bee sting any day to them.

your post reminds me that he past week I was on top of a heap of wood for my stove, 1.2 tons or so, which I was about to store at home, and I found a little black scorpion (about 1 In long) on a broad piece of wood , just beside my right , bare as usual, foot ... shit! by istinct I smashed it with a stick , just an instant before regretting of having done that - though their sting is vicious they're almost helpless by day and very shy little creatures - they dont sting on purpose what they cant eat, which should teach something to mankind. ape istinct from my side, I suppose.

I find it strange and sad that so many people are put off from barefooting (either temporarily or permanently) by a single bee sting or other pretty minor injury... You're saying this, but I've seen it several other times as well... 'I stepped on a piece of glass and my mom never let me go barefoot again' was in the introduction of a new member of the SBL mailing list some time ago... have seen other examples both here and on the SBL list.

I can't help but wonder, how often did you skin your knee when you were little? How often did you get a cut, scrape or splinter in your hands, playing outside? Would you yourself or your mom suggest going around full-time with knee pads (although they have their use for rollerblading) or gloves? Would you stop playing a certain sport if you took a fall one time only? What is it about bare feet that makes people overreact like this?

(Please don't take this as a personal attack, just something I've been wondering about for a long time and your post brought it up, as I said you're definitely not the only one who's done/said something like it! And glad to hear you do go barefoot again now :))

LOL, that's true, at four years old maybe this was the wrong example then.... but still remains I've heard this from adults and mothers too when pertaining to foot injuries, as opposed to skinned knees/smashed fingers or even bumped heads.

first off those lil buggers are attracted to red. Now if you get stung heres a trick to take the sting away quickly and not let it swell etc. My mom is a nurse and there was no smoking in our house. But had a bag of loose tabacco. If you get stung take a bit of tabacco and mix with a dab of water to make a paste..put it on the sting and a bandaid and it'll pull the pain right now and heal it quickly.

Hey C5, that was a great story, thanks for sharing! Did you ever know why that attractive girl was barefooted at unlikely place such as school? I can vouch for those feelings that went through your mind at the time. Not a boring story in the least bit!!

My barefooting started out on the same premise, as during the summer months my feet were always encased in shoes and socks. Being so, I remember being subjected to a little tease now and then. Actually I wanted to go outside barefoot, but was too shy to even consider exposing my feet in front of others.

At the age of 15 I started dating this hippie girl who was not afraid to go barefoot in the least bit. I can recall on one Saturday afternoon while we were sitting on the grass outside her house, she being barefoot herself, noticed that I was wearing sneakers without socks. She seized the opportunity, proceeded to untie my shoes and pulled them off. I was mortified with the thought of being barefoot, but tried desperately not to show it. Over time, I began to take things in stride and with her help, my fears of being barefoot diminished and it became pleasurable instead of embarrassing.
