Robert Johnson. Okay, so he was a blues guitarist, but he's influenced, either directly or indirectly, everyone since. Guitarists like Albert King, Muddy Waters etc, who have in turn influenced the likes of Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, who heve influenced just about everyone who's ever picked up a guitar. Eric Clapton is a huge fan, Bob Dylan is a huge fan, Jimmy Page is a huge fan (Led Zeppelin's 'The Lemon Song' actually has Johnson's lyrics.) And that's just a few.

Robert Johnson is the most important early figure.

I also cannot stand Elvis. I suppose I am just missing what others see in him, but I find his music to be dull and boring. I voted for Bob Dylan, but there are so many influential artists who were very important to early rock.

This is a bullshit statement...therefore I see it as invalid.

Where do you think EVERY OTHER ARTIST on your list got their licks, sound, look...EVERYTHING from. Who did they all idolize? Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.....the list goes on and on.

The rock artists of the fifties are still influencing the genre today. The pointy haired idiots who play rock music today just don't know it.

Just how did Elvis contribute more? He didn't write songs, wasn't a technically talented musician...how are his efforts greater than Chuck Berry or any other 50's artist that actually wrote their own songs?

Definently John Lennon, both with the Beatles and without them he revolutionized rock.

I have to vote for Morrison simply because he is my favorite on that list and the most important to me. Even the Doors will tell you they were influenced by the Beatles, the Stones, many of the great Blues names that were mentioned before, many great Jazz names, and believe it or not even Frank Sinatra (Jim liked to think of himself as a crooner like Frank sometimes).

Looks like Lennon is winning. Rock-n-roll was already in full bloom by the time of Lennon. He once said that, 'If rock-n-roll had another name it would be Chuck Berry.'
