So I just had a big freakout about the number of chemicals clinging to my skin after reading an article about all the utter shit they put in shampoo, condtioners soap, cosmetics etc. Had a nice long shower using just plain water and feel much better now. I have pretty bad excema atm, and to my amazement I didnt even need to put my moistriser on it after the shower. Im never washing my hair with shampoo again lol, seriously you guys should try it, detergent is crap for the environment anyways =) xxx

Well you could try more natural shampoos and soaps. Like at a health food store like whole foods or trader joe's. I'm guessing they don't have chemicals in them but I'm not sure, its safe to assume so though. There are always ways to find out too, whether you ask someone that works there or if there's a phone number on the bottle. But if you don't wanna wash your hair thats totally cool, whatever makes you happy! Haha just telling you just in case you wanted to. :)

All of my life, I've had eczema. Yes, all those chemicals do have an effect on your skin and the environment. There are alot of all natural products that are great. I use an all natural soap that has ingredients that help my skin. Neem (sp) shampoo is good for sensitve scalps.

So have you read the ingredients in your toothpaste? :ack:

I have too much fun with my skin and hair care routine to omit all products, but I'm a freak when it comes to using ones with healthy ingredients. J/A/S/O/N makes some great cleansers and toothpaste and Giovanni makes excellent natural but salon-quality shampoos and other hair products. I use a lot of pure oils like camellia or jojoba for moisturizing, as well as liberal use of pure aloe vera on my face at night.

I totally agree with you about your basic point though, which is to be wary of what one puts on their skin.

Hehe, I totally agree with you guys, I just had a bit of a freakout... assumed just because you could buy something in a shop it was safe to use or something, its scary the things that can be approved to put on the skin, I mean, some ingredients are deadly poisons if they are eaten!

Lai panther - I have read my toothpaste now, and I wondered why I always had dry skin round my mouth =S

How do they get away with selling us this shit to put on our bodies *looks bewildered* All natural is the way to go methinks.

Putting things on your skin is essentially eating them...If you rub garlic on your foot you can taste it in your mouth within 15 minutes!!!

I agree though, the stuff in personal care products today is outrageous...I have All organic personal care products here.

    Yeah! You garlic-waster!

Idk, personally, my hair gets really oily if I don't use shampoo, and I've tried just using water in the shower out of pure laziness, but it didn't work. I still felt all grungy afterwords. I'm surprised you're just learning about the chemical thing now--it's literally impossible to escape them in our society today. It's all up to you how you deal with it.

For the shampoo thing: you could use conditioner only and avoid sodium lauryl/laureth sulfates altogether. We had a thread about it a few months ago: http://www.hipforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=187204

There is another good alternative to avoid the harsh sulfates and to use a shampoo with sodium myreth sulfate. This is what natural products like J/A/S/O/N and the like use in their shampoo when they advertise "SLS Free".

Sodium myreth sulfate is very similar to the other sulfates, but the key difference is that it has two extra carbon molecules--which doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but this structural difference makes the entire molecular composition larger and therefore less penetrable to the hair and scalp. It stays on the surface instead of leeching into the skin and hair follicles, making it gentler and safer.

So there you go, a little science with your beauty.

It's not hard to avoid chemicals strawberry fields forever.

Here's how you do it :
    1) Go to your health food store
2)Look for Dr. Bronners or ask where it is
3)Buy a liter of your preferred concentrate(hemp oil is my fav.)
The worst chemical in Dr. Bronners is like vitamin E or glycerin. It's pretty clean stuff.
    4) Go home and use it, and dilute it in water to make it economical!

I know about all that organic stuff--hello, I live in san francisco! :) I meant it would be impossible to avoid all chemicals everywhere 100%. PVC is found in alot of building materials, not just vinyl siding, and there's probably some where you live. Not to mention pollution, esp in a big city or any urban area. Even if you live in a rural area, there's no doubt some nuclear power plant or some other chemical factory nearby, emitting god-knows-what into our lungs. I stay healthy as best I can, but I'm not going to obsess about living to be 137 years old.

i don't use shampoo. and Avacado Noni is right. rubbing things on your skin is like eating htem. so i don't use deodorant. your skin is part of your digestive system so rubbing it on your skin can't be good for you. but when i wash my hands i use soap. at least that stuff gets washed off....

Uhh...if you wash your hands with soap, why won't you wash your body? They both get rinsed off...?

And your skin is not part of your digestive system. Yes, certain chemicals and Vitamin D can be absorbed through it, but your lungs also absorb chemicals from the air--does that make your lungs part of your digestive system too? Chemicals from your skin don't go through the whole metabolizing process, thus, your skin is part of your integumentary system, not digestive.

And anyway, there's plenty of natural, safe products on the market to wash yourself with, it's no excuse for having poor hygene. At my massage school we use a cream that's actually edible. There are things you can do if you're paranoid about chemicals.
