I'm white with dreads, I haven't had any trouble. Most people of other cultures are fine with it, if a bit bemused.

I've never seen or heard of such a case.
In fact I see more whites with dreads than I do any other ethnicity.

i don't see how one could be offended by someone else's hair in its natural state.

the only time Ive ever heard of a person who didn't like white people with dreads was by a member on this forum. i will not name her, but she thinks only blacks should have dreads.

I'm not sure of her race, but I'm sure she failed to see that if she stopped brushing, regardless of her race, she would end up with dreads eventually.

That seems odd to me. Rastafarians are super peaceful people.

I am white and haven't had any problems.
Also, if you are worried about "cultural theft" or any other BS term, don't sweat it. All of us have influences from different places and all of us have dreads for different reasons. The only negative comment I have received are from white people who don't even know how hair naturally dreads. I get a lot of compliments on it from people from all different races.
If someone has a problem with it, they may very well have a problem with themselves, underlying racial hostility, etc.
love your nappy head, whatever it looks like.

I know, but the vibe was hostile and they seemed offended strictly because he was white and had fat locks hangin. :/

mmm, way I see it Celts and cavemen had dreads. Dreads are part of every culture if you dig deep enough into the past. But dreads don't belong to any race, religion, culture...

    It's hair.

And I think that white people put more of a stigma on it than any other race. That's what I've found, anyway.

    I agree, knotdirty.

And even if this were true, do we not borrow things from people we meet? If certain people cannot have dreads, then other people shouldn't straighten or colour their hair, dress a certain way, etc. Where does it end? Everyone influences everyone else.

I've never had any problems, I even went to Jamaica a couple of months ago, everyone I met there loved my dreads and called me "Bob Marleys daughter" haha

when wastingthedawn went to africa she told me that in mosambique you have to have a lisence to have dreadlocks. You obtain this liscence by being an artist. If you are caught having locks without a liscence you can be jailed. something like that. It would be better from her mouth im sure, but thats the jist of it.

I had someone approach me once for wearing a shirt from jamaica and said "white girl, you don't know nothing about that. don't wear that shirt". and pulled my shirt. i was so offended and hurt. now i'm sorta afraid to allow my hair to dread. i don't want to offend anyone of be the cause of conflict.

Half of life is conflict. The other half is resolution.
