There's usually alot of talk about the U.S. possibly drafting men for the army, reinstating the draft, and so on. Alot of people seem worried about it. My question is, isn't that what the selective service is? A permanent draft? This is from the sss.gov website: WHO MUST REGISTER Almost all male U.S. citizens, and male aliens living in the U.S., who are 18 through 25, are required to register with Selective Service. It's important to know that even though he is registered, a man will not automatically be inducted into the military. In a crisis requiring a draft, men would be called in sequence determined by random lottery number and year of birth. From what I understand from this, it's possible for the gov to call on all S.S. registered men at any time they feel it might be nessecary. Wouldn't that be considered a draft, or is there some other difference I'm not aware of?
You're basically right - supposedly there would have to be a vote to reinstate a draft for a specific conflict, but that's just a technicality. The government, however, would probably do just about anything before actually instituting a draft these days, because there would be mass resistance, and they rely on the complicity and apathy of the public to get away with the garbage they do.
They managed to pull off the whole vietnam sham for YEARS despite the resistance, and considering who's running the show right now, I don't think it would be much different if they chose to do the same thing all over again. All they have to do is throw in a few words like terrorism and patriot or freedom.
The difference, now, I think, is that americans of the 60's were living with a different set of values. The older generation were used to the idea of sacrifice (for better or worse). People now are living with a completely opposite set of values - they are accustomed to self-indulgence, getting whatever they want, and living pretty sheltered existences. They are certainly willing to turn a blind eye to OTHER children or OTHER PEOPLE'S children getting killed - but they aren't about to volunteer themselves or their families. Especially for the current Iraq occupation. The one way a draft might be accepted is if the government faked another attack similar to 9/11 - there's a chance that you'd see the rabid patriotic sentiment revived again and an acceptance of anything...so you may be right...
What happens if you don't sign up for the Selective Service? I remember reading somewhere in the Constitution of this great country that said the government cannot force its citizens into military service. I do plan on protesting the SSS when it comes time for me to register, and I do not plan on registering no matter what. I would rather rot in a jail cell than serve the leaders who lie to the people that "elected" them.
whatever they want to call it, i know they were doing involuntary callbacks on some retired military peoples and some people with 'special' training.
