I attempted reading Farenheit 451 and Brave New World shortly after reading 1984 because I really enjoyed the frightening prophecies in 1984 and thought that I'd be able to find good prophecies in these books as well, but I just couldn't finish either of them. I especially had a difficult time with Brave New World. I might try to pick up Farenheit 451 again because I remember relating myself to the teenaged girl a bit but after the first three chapters or so it really didn't capture my interest.

I'm not sure why but however hard I tried to get myself into the books, I couldn't. People have told me that the biggest problem they had with 1984 is that they couldn't relate to Winston at all but I loved the book because not only could I relate to the main character but the writing was easy to follow yet amazing and the prophecies scared the shit out of me.

I thought 1984 was one of the most brilliant pieces of literature I've read yet. So, yeah, I'd reccommend you to try reading Orwell's 1984.

And on a similar note, I've read, but didn't love, Animal House, too.

Wanting Seed! Wanting Seed! Wanting Seed!!!

it's my favorite book of the genre, as well as my favorite book, it's by Anthony Burgess, it focusses mainly on religion, over-population, and the plagues of peaceful world
but covers so many topics it's amazing, real nice little love story involved as well

also, if you are interested in good prophecies Philip K. Dick had some amazing foresight
I'm not usaully too big a fan of sci fi, but he is an amazing writer

I am actually inclined to agree, but only because all his other works, particularly his short stories, are even better! F451 is still a great read, though.

I am currently rereading The October Country (NTBCW The October Game), a collection of his early short stories - most of which feature Death in some guise or other.

Madlizard... I read your comment about failing to relate to WS in 1984. My recommendation is not to get trapped by mainstrean thinking into anything, be it reading, green issues, fashion. I can't relate to Darth Vader, but I still find him a fascinating bloke, and would quite gladly drink a pint with him. Sometimes when we begin reading books and can't get into them is mainly because we find them a tad boring. It might be worth saving the book to read it at a later date when you're more up to it.

Farenheight 451 is far superior to 1984, george orwell was talkin out of his arse, if he hadnt written that book we wouldnt be in all this shit with government. That book should be banned and burnt like in farenheit 451.

I think farenheight 451 describes our present political situation much more accurately and if you people saying "read 1984" actually shut the fuck up yourselves and read farenheight 451 perhaps you would
    1) be more on topic here, and
    2) actually have something to say about literature thats worth reading
rather than writing your comments like ignoramouses who have seen the film 1984 but never read the book.

You people who just say "shut up and read 1984" you get right on my tits with that kind of attitude its people like you that show others in North Korea and Iran, and Afghanistan, what a bunch of illiterates westernners can be

perhaps you 1984 supporters should stick to stories about Biggles,
    and "Mr Happy"

scorpion are you some kind of turkey? Of course I know what a book is! Its a load of paper with words on it that people read so that they can feel superior to other people who eithr cant afford to buy it or cant be bothered to read it. I have read a lot of these things and I am therefore not just superior to other people but a guru of literature.
How many books have you read??? I have read 125,765 - with 5 unfinished that I am reading simultaneously
