For Americans, I think that a mental and physical commitment is what is most important for a good relationship.
Mental - you both agree to be monogomous with each other, and to respect each other's wishes, and to help each other as much as possible in getting through life's problems, by providing emotional support ans solutions.
Physical - you regard your love life as very important, and you try to learn as much as possible about what pleasures your partner most, and then you put his/her pleasure ahead of yours. You make love through, not to, your partner, and yours will follow.
