I would say that the hippies helped the US avoid future conflicts more than get out of 'Nam... One could argue that one of the reasons for which the US did not make the Cold War bloody was because of the hippie influence. Anyhow, I was refering to Frankie... who like, Dorian_Gray kindly mentioned, was rather young at the time.
Sorry, kids, but I was there. You weren't. Was I young? Yep. With it? Yep. Saw the Beatles in concert. Went to peace rallies and protests against Tricky Dick. As I said, I was there. I supported change. I fought for peace. Now, *ahem!*, I repeat: What have YOU done to change things?
Rubin, why ya such a cynical negative person sometimes? Looking around thorugh all the threads Ive seen of yours and posts, you seem to have this tendency to not give a fuck what anyone else says and believe without exception that youve got the right story. why cant you just chill out and open up to discussion? youre really a downer for a bunch fo us i think
I have nothing to prove to you, old man. I am in peace with myself and my own efforts for peace and anything else.
Hey people. For we think all in a way in the same direction, there`s no need to blame each other for being too young, or for not having done so much for peace as you did. Franklin, sorry for my blame on you, but i thought, that you were a little bit to self-conscious. Sure, I didn`t do more than you, but everybodys time will come, when he can stand up and say, what he thinks. Even for todays youth, this time will come. I am hoping, that I can help to change the world, although it won`t happen today. But as Rubin said: There`s no need to prove anything, though. As long as you can look in the mirror and say: "Yeah... i am doing things the right way", you`re on the right track, I think.. Alright: peace, love and a cold beer to everyone!
Nah, I think I get what youre saying Rubin. Or maybe not, I guess I am just too young to understand a 20 year olds thoughts, being so much younger than that....
haha yup that's it! lol been interesting catching up with this thread... lots of entertaining arguments hehe glad they aren't getting TOO hostile though! as a whole i think Franklin may be right about our generation, but there are obviously lots of young people who are very passionate about it still. It's not our fault as such though, society has just been moving in quite a materialistic and apathetic direction i think. and as much as I don't like some of Rubin's comments sometimes either, he has a point about not having to prove himself to people i think, i'm sure he is hardly a warmongerer lol
Hmmm...seems as though everyone is either too old or too young and naive to understand your worship *snicker*. I agree, it's really not the fault of yours. Today's youth is being overwhelmed by media stimuli. When I was your age, there were three channels on TV. Three. No internet. If I wanted to find out something, I went to a library. If I wanted to listed to music when I was out walking, I had to take along a harmonica. If I wanted to make a phone call, I had to find a phone booth. Today we are bombarded every which way with this, that, and the other. Is it any wonder that today's youth are confused and distracted? As far as "Lord" Rubin proving himself, I think he does need to--to everyone, not just to me. He sounds like he's got a religious problem: he thinks he's god, and everyone else disagrees.
Well, for one we didn't sit at the computer even for a minute, no one had one except perhaps people in wall street, or Bill Gates. The street was the main scene; parks, avenues, cafeterias...those were regular hangouts, and mostly in people's pads relaxing, smoking, listening to "get together". Hippies were as individuals as there are names in the Phone-book. Some took heavy drugs and played guitar, while others hardly touched even the weed and played guitar. Some worked in the post office and others as messengers, some originated fashions and others followed them. The mood back in 69 was about personal freedom, and survival, and very few ever talked about the war, since survival was numero uno. College students protested against the war a lot, but basically it was because they didn't have the guts to quit college where they were constantly fed the whole political issue, and having no personal freedom themselves, they made a show of protest and that was mainly against the Reagan home-war machine. However, helicopters and machine- guns will always win against picket signs and magic- markers. There were opinions and lifestyles incredibly different from one another because it was not about following anything, but about exploring your own individuality, and living the way you decided, and not according how the system dictated or your mom and dad desired. As there are so many incredible variety of very famous actors and each makes many movies and in those movies play a great variety of roles, that's how I saw my generation. No one was copying anyone, just exploring the possibilities of their own individuality. Some individuals you could predict and others not. The interesting part was not knowing what was next. I believe in more present times, being more influenced by the media, people are told how to talk, where to eat and even how to smell on a daily basis. The fashion-makers are like predators in a jungle where the hunted are the gullible, and the rifles are pc's and tv sets, and the ads popping everywhere are the poisonous arrows that get you no matter where you are. In conclusion I say that as you go back, each generation or decade before has something more glamorous to offer, but that is what is good about the world, it keeps on changing, and the present has something that the past was lacking, and the past was not provided with the modern gadgets that the present enjoys. There is always something missing and something to be exceedingly glad about. You choose which on to focus on, and which to forget. It's your life and your mind. PEACE.
i believe that now people are free to expres themselves in any way they want.by the time pased, society managed to accept people that are different than others, that have different believes, different lifestyles and so on. if a hippie wants to make a protest against something,he is free to do it...it's a bigger grade of liberty now than it was back then. and this is my opinion!
