Best place in Southeast is the City of Brighton and Hove. Lots of things to do from swimming in the cold English channel to the macabre clownified amusement arcade at the end of the pier. Convieniently located so as to get breath taking views of the shoreline which goes toward Shoreham (THe last remaining chimney in Shoreham got smashed down as it looked like some kind of (Allow room for fantasy) Anyway it goes on toward Worthing and then on toward Selsey bill. The other direction takes you toward Hastings etc etc. Ashame that Brighton is a pebbled beach. Apparently it used to be sand and then the council came and bunged pebbles. Perhaps because Brighton gets strong winds and sand plus sea weed often get blown on to the road running parrelel to the promenade.
Brighton does get very windy and if it was a sandy beach you'd get blasted with the stuff. You get used to walking on pebbles in bare feet after 5 years or so. I think it's an urban myth that the council deliberately covered what, 2 or 3 miles of the shoreline with pebbles. For those who can't do without their sand, there's a "beach sports centre" under construction featuring specially imported sand which will apparently include a "sunbathing area". Ugh.
Aeems like every other person on here right now is from Brighton. I reckon we should organise a Hipforums Brighton gathering, maybe over the summer....
In fact I shall be going to Brighton in early April... does anyone know anywhere cheap to stay, hostel type thing? Last train back is stupidly early:uhoh2:
There's a list of people's MSNs stuck to the top of the forum in the thread 'Hipforums UK: The Next Generation'. Pop in there, tell us a little bit about yourself, add your MSN, and you can get people's addresses from the list....
Just checked up rail fares from Blackheath to Brighton. It is near £20 cheap day return which isn't that bad. Thought it would be something like fifty quid. South east England is so densly populated that it makes the rest of the country seem spacious. Having said that, there are still some secluded locations near where I live.
there's a couple of backpacker places, don't know what they're like to stay in but will check the details next time I walk past. might also be worth checking with the Universities of Sussex and Brighton whether student halls are available during the Easter hols.
I lived in Green St Green from 3 – 28ish. I walked to Orpington most Saturdays to buy computer games or music, and have the occasional swim at the Walnuts. Did you know the McDonalds used to be a cinema?
I am ashamed to say, despite having numerous gay friends, and having been through a real 'Quadrophenia' phase, I have never been to Brighton. I'd like to, though... Maybe this summer...?
I did a bit of work in Brighton for a couple of days. Seemed like a good city. Would like to check it out for fun next time....
So today I walked past the Grapevine at the heart of the trendy North Laine - looks OK, from £15 pppn and handy for the station. They also seem to have taken over the old Brighton Backpackers on the seafront. Learn more at http://grapevinewebsite.co.uk/.
Avoid places like Clapham Common. Men don't leave the Common alive. Also avoid Brixton as it is seriously risky. Police have to use heavy handed tactics because it is so rough around Brixton. Many gangs live side by side each with own geographical boundary mapping-more advanced than Sat nav. Best parts of Brixton is Electric Avenue, the market place and some of the unique shops there. I am not sure if there are any night clubs anymore but heard of one that is very popular Oh yeh, avoid getting stranded in South Chessington. Trying to get back after the last train has departed is a nightmare of a vampire ride.
