This movie got alot of flak for the insinuation that Alexander the great as bi-sexual. I was just wondering what everyone here thought of this, did it add/ take away anything from the experience. If you read into it there are alot of interesting reasons why oliver stone decided to develop that plotline. the new dvd, alexander revisited does touch alot on this subject with some special features & a great interview with oliver stone. The extended footage really does a good job of explaining it more in depth as well.
I havent seen the movie but...Alexander was actually bi, I think. Ancient Greek men often had sexual relationships with other men It was commonplace in society, I guess.
He is depicted considerably more gay than he most likely actually was. The film concentrates much more on his male relationships who are all pretty vague historically speaking. He loved Hephaistion, but sexually? Who knows, maybe as just like his own brother. Alexander's relationship with Barsine, a woman who was a few years older than Alexander is not shown, she was supposedly a woman who Alexander was in love with. He also had more female than male lovers, which is hardly hinted in the film. But it's all pretty vague anyway... Alexander was very likely bisexual, however that is very uninteresting compared to that he conquered Asia.
I agree with some of the critiques that they focused a little too much on that aspect when it wasn't set in stone, however I think you should check out the revisited edition in that case, the extra scenes really do flesh out the rest of the movie better. btw I got an invitation to this if anyone interested, it's a survey for the movie with some prizes, if anyone's interested, link, the code to enter is 300.
Hard to say, i think that in revisited they kind of flesh out the rest of the movie so it's not so much focused on that aspect, they've extended alot of the movie. Worth checking out if you did/didn't like it the first time around as it is a gigantic improvement.
Mary Renault posited this in her fiction book The Persian Boy (1972). it is entirely plausible. the culture allowed it, and in some places, promoted it, esp for armies on long campaigns.
course he wasnt bisexual! do you think a big strong guy that conquered 1/4 of the planets surface was gay? no way -
