I'm going on a two-week trip for a class and am a bit worried about maintaining a healthy, vegan diet for the duration. I'm bringing nuts, protein bars and my regular supplements, but besides that I'm not sure what to pack. I'm pretty sure I'll be the only vegan on the trip, which will make group meals a nightmare.

    Can I have some suggestions?

What kind of trip are you going on? Will you have access to restaurants and grocery stores? Or is this something where you need to bring your own food if you want to eat how you would like?

We're flying to New York to visit art galleries, museums, operas, the symphony, and broadway. I think we're going to be together as a group for at least 10 hours of the day. I don't think I'll have grocery store access. From what I understand, we eat breakfast and lunch together and then dinner is up to us. So, it's safe to assume that I need to bring a lot of my own food.

I have not flown in a long time, so maybe someone else can better help you. You should check to see what you can and cannot take with you on a flight. I have heard they have some crazy rules in place.

I am sure New York City has grocery stores. As long as you eat at actual restraurants they should be willing to make something for you if you ask. Hopefully your class does not plan on just eating at fast food chains. That would really take away from such a trip, in my opinion, and make it very difficult for you.

Do you know where you will be staying? If so you should be able to look online at what is in the area and check or call ahead to see how vegan friendly the restaurants are there.

    happycow.net

    and other such sites
NYC has some of the best vegan restaurants in the country.
pop over to TRIBE.net and get on a vegan NYC tribe and see what is being suggested.

As mentioned, NYC is a GREAT place for vegans. They have soooo many vegan restaurants and options, and are very conscious of the vegan lifestyle in general. I would certainly pack some snacks though, and request a vegan meal if you get one on the plane.

I'm going to Spain in a few weeks. Now THAT is a difficult place to be vegan! Luckily my sister is nearly fluent in Spanish and can translate for me.

Bring a good attitude. Group meals should never be a nightmare.

Theres probably at least a vegetarian in your group, or someone who knows a vegetarian/vegan ..

this may not help you so much, but for others who are traveling and need to find veg food (especially on long road trips) This book I got called Healthy Highways is the shit. It lists hundreds of veg resturants and grocery stores all over the US. Its well worth it. Whenever I go to a new city I can figure out what the best veg resturants are and they are usually awsome.

I'm in the same boat as you ... I'm going on a week long vacation with my boyfriend and his parents ... meat eaters all. So they're going to be picking where we eat ... and since I recently became a vegetarian, they're not really used to my lifestyle. I'm kind of dreading having to take a crapload of my own food, but it looks like that's what I'll have to do. I'm a little set in my ways with my soy milk/granola bar breakfast but I guess I'll have to find an alternative. We're going to be driving from Ohio down to the Virginias, Tennessee, and Kentucky ... probably not very vegetarian friendly

you guys need to think in reverse here:
take a restaurant meal and break it down: what is plant based?

    grits (south)
    potatoes
    salads
steamed veggies (beware the butter, but 99 percent of restaurants use partially hydrogenated margarine --and I'd default to butter because transfats are SO bad)
    fruits
    nuts
most restaurants will have PBJ on the kids menu.
if they offer buffalo wings, they have celery and carrot strips.
most high dollar places will accommodate you if you ask the server VERY nicely, and tip.

take a six-pack sized cooler with you. fill with cut veggies and whole fruits (no knife in there if flying-put that in checked luggage) nut butters, hummus, in a camera bag or purse (and more in checked luggage) have dried fruit/veg, nuts, granola bars and whatever else you like.
a couple tea bags and a water bottle and you have a nice picnic meal for several days.
Some folks chose traveling for a mono-food diet: all apples/grapes/ bananas/whatever.
    I wouldn't, but I'm a bit of a foodie.
