Did anyone ever get into shadowrun? I always really liked the setting but the book layout was a nightmare. I played this for many years and still couldn't find some of the rules when I needed them. The system was also a little clunky, but the 3rd and 4th editions addressed a lot of that.
Shadowrun is such a great setting. Haven't played much of it in the past few years but it's my wet dream to see it done as mmorpg. Besides pnp, I've also played the SNES and Sega Genesis versions. And once at Gencon, I won a pile of Fasa stuff in a Shadowrun LARP session. Good times.
I love the Genesis game. I just bought it again at a local used game shop for $5.00. I played that game for the better part of two years before I beat it when I was a kid. Have you ever read any books by William M. Gibson? His books were the inspiration for the Shadowrun setting. Some of them are really good, like Neuromancer and Burning Chrome, but others are terrible, like Mona Lisa Overdrive. Neuromancer is about a decker on the run of a lifetime. It is an incredable book.
Mona Lisa ain't terrible. Idoru was terrible. Well ok, maybe it was a good story but I'll never know 'cause I couldn't get past the crappy grammar. Glad he had an editor finally kick him in the ass for his newer stuff. His stuff from the 80's was gold though. The thing I really like about Shadowrun over say Cyberpunk or other sci-fi-ish games is the inclusion of fantasy and magic as well as the tech.
read some of the storys based on it. sort of half way knew there was a game somewhere behind them, but never came in contact with it. =^^= .../\...
What I didn't like about Mona Lisa Overdrive is that the whole book felt like a huge build up and the last ten pages are the (exciting but too short) pay off. It felt weak to me. Like he just cut the story short because the dead line was closing in on him. I've never read Idoru, but a friend of mine who also likes his books told me not to waste my time. I agree with you about Shadowrun being superior to other cyberpunk games due to the magic element mixing with the technology. I think that it makes the game. I also like that the Native Americans came up, took their land back and put us on a reservation of sorts. That always makes me smile when I think about it.
Haha!! Yeah, I always liked that too. Man...now I really wanna play Shadowrun. Maybe I should bust out the books and GM a 'one off' session.
