my ped told me a week ago that Michael may become congested and more fussy in the upcoming weeks. and to use an asperator to get the junk out of his nose. every time i try it i get nothing. (i think its in this throat.) does anyone know the secret to those things??? i could be over reacting, but is it normal for 3 week olds to become this congested? the ped said that it's because his immunne system is getting rid of the one he was born with. did anyone go through this? the ped keeps saying hes fine if he doesn't have a temp. and he doesn't. but i'm still nervous. i don't want my lil man to be sick!!! i love his doc, but i feel sumthing is wrong here. also last night he slept longer than usual. do infants sleep more or less when they're sick??? any advice at all is helpful. thanks
if you think he's congested, sit in the bathroom with the door shut and the hot water in the shower on, it will make a steam room and help loosen anything up!! The sleeping part could be he'll be one of those babies that sleep through the night early. My son was 4 weeks old when he slept through the night, and that was in his own crib too. Best wishes!!!
i'm being a crazy mom... i called the doc and he said it's normal congestion...i'm still not sure that there is a such thing. thanks for the advice. my grandma said to do the same thing. the doc said try saline spray, but i'm going to try the shower thing first. he just sounds bad. i hope he sleeps through the night early. though i bet all parents wish that. again thank you.
I been through it. Give the little one a bit more fluids. And yes, use the bulb when you can. It's the baby version of a cold. he/she can't blow thier own noses. Probably still a little amniotic fluid still in the lungs.
Squirt some breastmilk into his nose first to break up the mucous. Start a HOT shower in the bathroom, with the door closed and the exhaust fan OFF. After 5-10 minutes, sit in there with him and let the humid steam do it's trick. Keep his head elevated while he sleeps. *hugs* It's rough when a newborn is sick, but just keep him comfortable and rest with him, momma! You're doing a good job!
Have the ped run a test for RSV. He may have that. Use the aspirator, my daughter hated it, but it definitely helps.
when i was sick & stuff as a child & baby, my mum would put a wet (not dripping) towel on the radiator the room with the radiator on a low setting. that helped with the stuffyness. hope your little one is ok.
You might want to get a cool-mist humidifier. It will put some moisture in the air and help break up the mucous. Before you use the aspirator, squirt some breastmilk in each nostril, or put a couple of saline drops in there. Let it sit for a minute, then use the aspirator. Lots more stuff will come out that way.
my kiddo went through that. I put him, asleep, in a car seat in the bathroom while I had my hot shower then attacked him with the "snot-sucker," as he woke at the end of my shower. cool mist for the bedroom is a great idea.
A Saline dropper will help break up the mucous. babies have VERY tiny nasal openings, and every bit of dust can make them sound like they are choking, (as most babies are nose breathers and will nose breathe even if the nose is clogged.) Swaddle the baby well, tilt gently back, put a drop of prepared Saline into one nostril (I like Ocean, as it has no preservatives, don't use anything with any preservaties, especially the mercury based ones like Aryn) wait a few moments and GENTLY suck the junk out.(my dh calls this thing "The Booger Snocker" and it was his job with our first baby, as I couldn't stand to see her cry when I did it. He was the "Booger Snocker Dude" for about 3 months or more. And ALL four of my kids had normal Newborn Congestion. It is a real thing, but not a big thing, it usually bothers mama more than the baby, as long as the baby can nurse.) The baby will HATE this process intensely, and then you have to do the other nostril, but once it is done, they will be OK for a while. As Freek said, human milk will do well, too, as it has similar saline and has natural antibiotics to prevent infection.) If you make your own saline, make sure you follow a good recipie (you don't want to use too much salt, or it is nasty and can burn, and the saline IS neccesary for it to work well) make sure you use boiled distilled water, and only NON Iodine, do not use "Sea Salt." Reglar NON Iodine salt or Kosher Salt is good but don''t use Sea Salt, as it has a lot of impurities you don't want to put up your baby's nose) Also, if you make your own, you need to make a new batch every day, because bacteria will begin to grow in it. Don't add anything other than salt and distilled, boiled, cooled water. It is normal for babies to have "snuffy" noses, and usually, if there is no fever, nothing to worry about. RSV always has severe symptoms,, the baby looks and acts sick and is lethargic, and in that case the doctor needs to see the baby. Chances are, with no fever, it is just "Newborn Congestion." which can be treated at home.
