for me it was a young golden eagle in scotland been mobbed by a peregrine falcon the eagle had no chance.
Slugs, snails and mushrooms are the greatest things I see in the forest because a forest couldn’t survive without the 3. I am just kind of goofing around I love being in the bush because there are so may great things to see. Cheers!
on the pure awe scale, I saw a bald eagle take down a rabbit a few days ago. I can watch prairie dogs for days. Oh, and a breaching whale: that was seriously cool, even at such a distance.
I'm a softie for deer - of all kind. I see a lot of them. And I see a lot of birds-of-prey & have seen some pretty spectacular aerial battles. But I think the most amazing thing I've ever seen was an entire herd of buffalo, crossing the road in front of me in a VERY organized fashion. love, mom
I was living on an island in the Aleutian chain where bald eagles were plenty. One day I noticed that they all up and dissappeared. A few days later I was exploring a remote cove and found their rookery. There must have been a hundred nests with mother eagles in them with literally hundreds flying around. I was awed.
Hiking thru the Olympic forest in '70 with some other folks and walking right into the middle of a sleeping(I guess) herd of elk. From almost complete silence except our soft steps on the path,to complete pandemonium as the elk realised we were in their midst and ran every which way to get away.Kind of startling, but impressive.
Once I came up on a bald eagle eating a coyote, another time I was pulled over on a road looking at a moose with my daughter and a HUGE bear crossed right in front of us.
A grizzly gear standing up looking at me. I was hiking in Glacier with some friends, when one of the crew went ahead in order to reach the facilities. She heard something coming out of the woods and thought it was a dear. Nope. She looked backed, knowing that there were three of us reight behind her about to some into a curve in the trail. She couldn't hollar or do anything for fear of the bear attacking. The bear realized that there were people on both sides of her. She rose to her feet when I first saw her. We very, very slowly moved back and looked down. Hoping that she would realize how scared we were. She did. She got pack on all fours and went on across the trail, with two cubs following her. OMG!!! As scary as it was, it was an awesome site. We know we were very lucky.
"the greatest?" Living in this enviroment thats a tough call. I think seeing a herd of caribou, at least a 1000 strong, marching through the middle of town. In Kotzebue, Alaska (late fall). or Have 5 polar bear standing along side the tug boat I was running at Prudue Bay, Alaska. Its a toss-up.............Dennis.....
The greatest thing i saw in the wild was probably an entire skeleton of a deer, still intact. it made me think of the power of nature. I also saw a bear eating garbage at a camsite.
