The folk revival of the 60's and early 70's produced some great music. Some of my favourites from that era....please do add your own faves. There's surely a lot of this stuff out there.

    Fairport Convention
    Pentangle
    Martin Carthy
    Anne Briggs
    Shirley and Dolly Collins
    Incredible String Band
    Steeleye Span
    Horslips
    Roy Harper

and slightly earlier, but absolutely essential - A.L. LLoyd.

So - I've left you US folks with a clear run :sunglasse

Bert Jansch is very good -

Donovan definitely, Neil Young - yes, I suppose so, although purists might disqualify him because he's done a lot of rock n'roll type stuff too.

Bob's no. 1 with me - but I deliberately tried to name only a small selection of British artists.

I just call it brilliant! But I guess he does fit into the 'folk' bracket in the wider sense.

You just named my favourites; Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Incredible string band and Steeleye Span. Also along my fav's are Magna Carta (especially Lord of the Ages), Trees and Spiro Gyra.

I also love music from artists like Christy Moore, Ewan MacCol (not sure if he's counted in the revival though), Bert Jansch, John Renbourn, Davey Graham, Donovan, Lloyd, Martin Carthy etc. and bands like Flibbertigibbet, Horslips and the Norwegian band Folque.

I was just listening to Ashley Hutchings' Morris on. :)

i've been getting more and more into the folk of the 60's-70's. The ones i mainly listen to are Donovan, Vashti Bunyan, The Incredible String Band, and Nick Drake. Now i see a whole wide variety of other artists i now need to check out [IMG]

I "roadied" for John Renbourn once...

...actually that's not entirely true; I got his guitar out of his mate's car for him.

Davy Graham was not strictly folk but did some interesting things with the genre
    Sandy Bull as well

....Leonard Cohen..? folk revival? what do you think?

Some other Brits I can recommend: Jade - Early 70's Fairport-ish folk-rock. Baez-type vocals give it a sweeter edge.

The aforementioned Mellow Candle - Irish psyche/wyrd-folk with unique two-girl harmonies.

And last but not least: Shelagh Macdonald - another hitherto-thought lost folk luminary vis-a-vis Nick Drake. Found alive and well last year having turned her back on music after making two stellar albums (now available as a double CD set) and experiencing a bad trip. The comparisons with Drake go further than her obscurity and disappearance. As a songwriter and singer, a truly original voice.
