    do dreads really smell?
i was at my cousins this weekend and they said everyone they knew that had dreads smelled.
the people they were talking about though had had thiers for a long time (5+) years, and the other one had dreads down the the floor.
    do you think that's why?

    i really don't want to smell... =[

Dreads do pick up odours easily, like smoke etc, but it smells nice again after you wash it. ;)

Mine don't smell. Mind you I did mine after the scottish anti smoking act so they haven't had the chance to smell...

so you guys think basically the only reason they would is smoke and all that?
that really blows, cuz who doesn't love some bud every now and then?

dreads do have a distinct smell
that is.....they don't smell like they're full of chemicals from shitty shampoo and products that most people use. (think of when you walk into the bath and body works store)
Every dread I've smelled smells like hair...sometimes hair oils, sometimes that "outdoors" smell, sometimes incense.
I suppose if you're used to hair smelling like "sun rippened raspberry" or "country apple" and chemicals...then yeah, dreads will smell.
    :)

According to my family/friends, mine don't smell. My hair's been locked up for 6 years now. :) Like everyone said, they do absorb atmospheric smells easily, like smoke from cigarettes, campfires, etc. Bud is slightly different, I think. It's smoke is of a different consistency, and doesn't seem to stick to ANYTHING too long (I think this is related to the oil vs. tar issue - just look and compare sometime, the difference between the residue of tobacco and that of bud...)

If improperly dried, locks can grow mildew. But mostly it's just a temporary atmospheric thing I think. Almost everything will be totally taken care of after a head-washing... I usually keep a pretty-smelling oil handy in case I need it to cover up any smells anyway. And if you find your dreads always smell like tobacco smoke, QUIT SMOKING!!

    :D
